ISLAMABAD - ICCI President Zafar Bakhtawari termed it unfortunate that due to the influence of USA, India has opted out of IPI project while USA was also pressuring Pakistan to shun this important project.
He expressed these views while talking to a delegation of Asian Foundation led by Gareth Aicken, Country Representative of The Asia Foundation, at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI). William S Cole, Senior Director, Governance, Law & Civil Society and Ms Veronique Salze Lozach, Director Economic Development Asian Foundation, also accompanied him.
Gareth Aicken said that the organization had been working in Pakistan since 1954, and was committed to a just and prosperous Asia Pacific. The foundation was working in the areas of governance, gender, economic reforms and development. He said that the foundation was working for building citizen-state relationships and supporting the political parties to be better organized and more responsive to the citizens.
William S Cole said that the Economic Development programmes of the Asian Foundation were aimed to promote investment and private enterprise, especially small and medium-scale businesses through pro-market reforms of the regulatory environment both at the local as well as national levels. Speaking on the occasion, Zafar Bakhtawari said that energy crisis was the most serious problem affecting growth of businesses and the overall economy.
He said Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) and TAPI gas pipeline projects were very crucial to reduce energy crisis of Pakistan. ICCI President termed it unfortunate that due to the influence of USA, India has opted out of IPI project while USA was also pressuring Pakistan to shun this important project.
He stressed that instead of thwarting Pakistans efforts to tackle its energy shortages, US should play a positive role and help Pakistan in overcoming its energy problem. He said that US has offered civil nuclear technology to withdraw India from IPI project, on contrary, US has not offered any viable option to Pakistan so far to overcome the energy crisis of Pakistan.
Elaborating the various objectives of Islamabad Chamber, Mr.Bakhtawari said that ICCI is striving to get representation in different stakeholder public sector organizations so that it could contribute more effectively to formulating business friendly policies.
