It's not going to happen. China had offered Pakistanis full-time electricity at unbeatable rate, but still Zardari's government refused.

I think, Indus river still have potential for several thousands megawatt of hydroelectric electricity , you must consider that as as a side effect it will tame the river and after building several Dam on it then floods will be stories of the past to tell to the childrens.

also you cam invest to some extent on getting energy from wind and Sun ,we have the Natural Gas but still we invest on the sun as even relying on oil is still renting time .

transferring electricity would be easier than transferring the fuel for that thermal planet ,If only Pakistan were faster with finishing their side of IP pipeline then it would have been another story , it could put an end on the shortage on energy in Pakistan at least for 40-50 years

^ My cousin was telling me about it when I was in Pakistan last summer.

Realistically transferring losses will be enormous if electricity has to be transmitted from china .. It may be upto even 80% losses approx ... Wagah Attari is more realistic and would be win win situation for both India-Pak , It would act as a CBM too ... In future If pak manages to have surplus I am sure India having deficit , i see no harm in India buying Electricity if it helps citizens accross the borders !!!

kindaa tru. its not a great idea to depend on pak for maintaing a thermal plant after an indian company builds them. pak has drastically low production from coal. its much better if they buy from us.

We have unbelievable amount of coal. Check out 'Thar' Coal Field in Sindh. Even Russia is interested in that.
The problem is, coal is generally a bad thing. We don't want people getting sick from the horrible pollution it creates.

yes you do have quite a bit but not unbelieveable. and trust me pakistan needs a few thermal plants and it will eventually become a power surplus nation. u have to open ur hands to world with a stable environment. neither russians nor chinese will come and work in pakistan.

What a convenient excuse. When the whole world is rushing after the coal to meet its energy requirement, here we have Pakistan sitting on top of one of the largest coal reserves not wanting to exploit it as they don't want to harm its citizens.. Bravo!!

well its true that coal is dirtier than oil and natural gas , but by today technologies it's nowhere as dirty as when it was in the England 18 centuries , but it also depend on the quality of the Coal itself ,if it's around the bed of the river I guess it must not be from the highest quality ,but when you need energy you must not be too picky about it's source .

That was a disaster. Many of your policy makers are regretting that decision. Instead of pumping your gas reserves to cars and houses, if it was instead used judicially to make power, Pakistan would have not faced this energy crises.

As far as I know Pakistani coal in Thar is not economically viable to be extracted. Only coal gasification can work there, but that in itself have huge potential.

Anyways if Pakistanis have problem with coal, they can sell it to India. We have no reservations regarding coal fired thermal power plants.

Thar-Coal project to produce cheap electricity: Dr Samar

ISLAMABAD: Renowned scientist Dr Samar Mumbarkmand on Saturday said the country had third biggest coal reserves which could be utilized for producing cheap electricity.

Talking to Pakistan Television, he said that scientists were working on the Thar-Coal project to meet the growing demand of the electricity in the country. The estimated cost of the project is $115 million, he said.

The Thar-Coal project will yield 100 Mega Watt (MW) electricity, he added

He said that 40 per cent electricity in the world is generated through coal.

Dr.Samar Mumbarakmand said besides producing of cheaper electricity, 100 million barrel diesel and gas could be produced through Thar-coal which would be sufficient for 30 years.

Thar-coal field has enough reserves for 500 years, he said.

He said that foreign countries had shown keen interest in the project.

He hoped that after the success of the project, foreign companies would come forward for investing in this sector.

Dr.Samar said that the massive support of government was available to continue the project.

He said that gasifires have been introduced which are being effective and result-oriented.
It is the government’s top priority to improve the energy sector, he said. Dr.Samar said that there is a serious need to focus on utilizing coal which is available in the biggest quantity.

He said that investors can be obtained 20 per cent profit after investing their money in this sector.

The scientist said: “It is a cost effective project which must be implemented in letter and spirit for overcoming the energy crisis in the country.”

He said that the project will start producing gas by August this year. He added that the project will also yield cheap diesel.

“We will try to use the Thar water for irrigation purpose, and for this, we are working on it,” he said.

This guy is a bit weird. In one source he is saying it can produce 200 MW for 700 years
and in the other he saying it can produce 100 MW for 500 years.
