India nuclear plant leaks!!

I have always maintained that Indian nuclear plants and locations are probably in worse shape than even those in the former Soviet republics. All sorts of #2 dramay baazi goes on there and no one has a darn clue. Oh well. Based on the responses above, it seems another raw nerve has been touched and the full backs are out in full swing defending the program and all that is within it.
Surely you have maintained your position based on some facts and figures; would you like to share those with us here?

.
Is it not a matter of concern for the humans living in and around india?
I don't buy this crap of human sabotage which world wide media is beating loudly.
This is a clear cut case of radiation leak due to poor state of familiaraization with the technology.
This is not the first time that it has happened in india, in past DAE had been dumping radioactive waste in rivers or simply in trash.
Once in Bhopal poisnous gas was released in air resulting in thousands of deaths.
People of Rajhistan were exposed to radiation after pokhran nuclear test.
in Jharkand children are being born with disabilities.
Apart from poor industrial practices a lot more is happening in india's nuclear operations but all stories does not make their way to the press. Simply, because western press will not print it as it may put credibility of western leaders and states at risk.
Imagine if this news makes its way out of india in to popular western or arabic or iranian media than it will seriouslky jepordise the credibility of IAEA and bankey moron.
Can you say the same for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station? If an incident like this can happen in Canada why a similar incident can not happen in India? You are talking as if Allah sent arch angel Gabriel directly to you who has told you what happened at Kaiga. Do you have any proof of any sort to back your claims up?

Following is a list of major accidents and a small quiz for you: Find how many of those happened in Russia and India?

December 12, 1952

A partial meltdown of a reactor's uranium core at the Chalk River plant near Ottawa, Canada, resulted after the accidental removal of four control rods. Although millions of gallons of radioactive water poured into the reactor, there were no injuries.

October 1957

Fire destroyed the core of a plutonium-producing reactor at Britain's Windscale nuclear complex - since renamed Sellafield - sending clouds of radioactivity into the atmosphere. An official report said the leaked radiation could have caused dozens of cancer deaths in the vicinity of Liverpool.

Winter 1957-'58

A serious accident occurred during the winter of 1957-58 near the town of Kyshtym in the Urals. A Russian scientist who first reported the disaster estimated that hundreds died from radiation sickness.

January 3, 1961

Three technicians died at a U.S. plant in Idaho Falls in an accident at an experimental reactor.

July 4, 1961

The captain and seven crew members died when radiation spread through the Soviet Union's first nuclear-powered submarine. A pipe in the control system of one of the two reactors had ruptured.

October 5, 1966

The core of an experimental reactor near Detroit, Mich., melted partially when a sodium cooling system failed.

January 21, 1969

A coolant malfunction from an experimental underground reactor at Lucens Vad, Switzerland, releases a large amount of radiation into a cave, which was then sealed.

December 7, 1975

At the Lubmin nuclear power complex on the Baltic coast in the former East Germany, a short-circuit caused by an electrician's mistake started a fire. Some news reports said there was almost a meltdown of the reactor core.

March 28, 1979

Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, America's worst nuclear accident occurred. A partial meltdown of one of the reactors forced the evacuation of the residents after radioactive gas escaped into the atmosphere.

February 11, 1981

Eight workers are contaminated when more than 100,000 gallons of radioactive coolant fluid leaks into the contaminant building of the Tennessee Valley Authority's Sequoyah 1 plant in Tennessee.

April 25, 1981

Officials said around 45 workers were exposed to radioactivity during repairs to a plant at Tsuruga, Japan.

April 26, 1986

The world's worst nuclear accident occurred after an explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It released radiation over much of Europe. Thirty-one people died iin the immediate aftermath of the explosion. Hundreds of thousands of residents were moved from the area and a similar number are belived to have suffered from the effects of radiation exposure.

March 24, 1992

At the Sosnovy Bor station near St. Petersburg, Russia, radioactive iodine escaped into the atmosphere. A loss of pressure in a reactor channel was the source of the accident.

November 1992

In France's most serious nuclear accident, three workers were contaminated after entering a nuclear particle accelerator in Forbach without protective clothing. Executives were jailed in 1993 for failing to take proper safety measures.

November 1995

Japan's Monju prototype fast-breeder nuclear reactor leaked two to three tons of sodium from the reactor's secondary cooling system.

March 1997

The state-run Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation reprocessing plant at Tokaimura, Japan, contaminated at least 35 workers with minor radiation after a fire and explosion occurred.

September 30, 1999

Another accident at the uranium processing plant at Tokaimura, Japan, plant exposed fifty-five workers to radiation. More than 300,000 people living near the plant were ordered to stay indoors. Workers had been mixing uranium with nitric acid to make nuclear fuel, but had used too much uranium and set off the accidental uncontrolled reaction.

August 9, 2004

Mihama, Japan: nonradioactive steam leaked from a nuclear power plant, killing four workers and severely burning seven others.

July 17, 2007

Kashiwazaki, Japan: radiation leaks, burst pipes, and fires at a major nuclear power plant followed a 6.8 magnitude earthquake near Niigata. Japanese officials, frustrated at the plant operators' delay in reporting the damage, closed the plant a week later until its safety could be confirmed. Further investigation revealed that the plant had unknowingly been built directly on top of an active seismic fault.

Dear Xeric i'm not addressing you but i had to say it that only morons can belive that after drinking radioactive water a living being can keep alive!
Al the reported 60 workers were simply exposed to radiation on their work place not at dinner table.
I think i don't need any efforts to have your agreement on the indian press is not trust worth.
I am that moron who happens to have a PhD in biomedical Sciences and says that drinking radioactive water does not kill a human being as a result of radiation exposure. This moron can give you links to tons of scientific literature pointing to this fact. This moron would also like to add this to your knowledge that very high doses of radioactivity are needed to cause cells to become cancerous which again takes time to kill a human. There is a HUGE difference between getting exposed to gamma rays form a direct emitting source and consuming 500 ml water laced with few microcurie deuterium and tritium.

NUCLEAR FACILITIES -- CIVILIAN & MILITARY ALIKE --- ARE NOT FASHION BOUTIQUES OR SUPERMARKETS WHERE EVERYONE CAN COME IN AND DO AS THEY PLEASE

THEY SHOULD BE GUARDED AND SECURED ACCORDINGLY

No need to shout, Very difficult to guard from insiders as claimed.

I am very sad to see how some of the members are slinging mud on India using this incident and in the process making some of the Indian members to sling the mud in return. It was an unfortunate incident, but these things happen and happen in every part of the world. The nuclear Scientists and technicians working in Indian institutions are not any less capable than the nuclear Scientists and technicians working in Pakistani nuclear facilities. I have first hand experience of working alongside Indian Scientists and by God they were/are as able, as proficient, and as innovative as were the Americans or the Chinese. Doing Science is a double edge sword, an organism can be used to make the life saving vaccine and the same organism can be also be used to kill thousands. All of us who work in the labs are well aware of the potential dangers associated with our tools, our chemicals, and our bugs. None of us want to let things go out of control as it not only would affect the environment but could also potentially bring an abrupt end to our scientific careers.

Whether Indian nuclear facilities are good or bad is anybody’s guess; I am sure none of us who are giving expert’s opinion has ever visited those facilities and experienced their quality first hand. Why talking about something that we have not seen with our own two eyes? If we have read something compromising about their standards of quality than that reference must be shared with the rest of the members so either it could be accepted or rebutted by the Indian members. Besides all this is not an issue in the first place; the reports are clearly suggesting that some idiot had contaminated a water cooler. No amount of security can stop these type of incidents to happen altogether and those who think it is possible have either never worked in such environments or are just too arrogant to accept the fact.

If we are doing all this because some Indians or their government has done similar to us, (which they have done no doubt), than this is childish. It is more than obvious that this thread has run its course of usefulness and has now turned into children’s playground. I would request the Mods to step in and either try to control the situation or simply close this thread down for good.

.
because we're going in circles and it's retarded.

Is mine, xeric or other statements unfair?

.
Let me make it simple for you; let me ask you a simple question: do you actually think that the indian CIVILIAN power plants should have a better/foolproof security apparatus in place?
Yes.

It is unfortunate that after qsaark's earlier posts, we have allowed this thread to degenerate into childish name calling. Moi being guilty as well.

Apologies and adios (for now).

And who are you?

Excuse me, but you are talking as if these plants are in your backyard. There is no drama over there. The people who need to be clear, are clear enough about what they are doing.

Only Pakistan is interested in keeping the issue alive. Obviously, it wants something to counter India on nuke safety issue. But alas, this minor thing won't help. No matter how sure you are about cracks in Indian nuclear domes, nothing is gonna happen.

And yes, you mentioned touching some nerve. I would say that Indian people (like Pakistanis) are bit emotional. You provoke them, and they will try to counter with everything they have. You make similar statements about Indian under wears, and you get same overwhelming response. It proves nothing. Don't go patting your own back for 'touching raw nerves'.

Chill buddies....

Look, nowhere in the world (including India and Pakistan) the nuclear plants are handled carelessly. But even after precautions, these things are not new to the world.

Pakistani nuke security is being questioned because of external threats. Even US had accidents and mistakes which included nuclear warheads. So, no one can blame other for such thing.

I don't think there is much left to discuss here. All the conversation is going in loops.

.
The Indian Nuclear Plants should be inspected by IAEA Team. The panic in the staff working at the plants is on its climax. They don’t know when they would be abducted by RAW. The smuggling of Uranium is also on the top. Should USA still continue nuclear deal with India when safety and security of nuke plants is at stake.

Btw do u know how many people actually work in the reactor?
Are u even slightly familiar how Permissions are granted to reactor Building?

Let me Give u a Fact Never told in this thread and which entirely dismisses your Statement.

When i visited the Narora Plant, They day we had to see the Nuclear Reactor Building we were all given Potassium Iodide Pills.

These pills actually saturate the radiation absorbing capability of the body and even if any radiation is absorbed by the body it doesnt any pose any real damage.

If a nuclear power plant were to leak radiation into the surrounding area, one of the forms of this is a radioactive isotope of iodine. If you did not take an iodine pill, then your body would absorb this radioactive isotope, which would be bad. By taking the pill, your 'filling' your body with normal iodine, which prevents your body from absorbing the radioactive form.

People who work in the Shift, and going to the reactor including the ones whom u r talking about Must have consumed these pills if at all they were actually inside reactor.

Now, if even after taking the pills they suffered some real additional radiation , it precisely means the reactor building is contaminated and we would have heard the serious news of Reactor Shutdown and Plant Closure.

This Unnoticed Fact Concludes Two Things ::

#1. These workers were NOT Inside the Reactor Building when Contaminated.
#2. There was No Radiation Leak as Trumpeted by a few members .

Batman This Argument Simply Denies 100% what u just Stated.
Unless you have the Display Screen Monitor to the CCTVs in That Plant which were never Installed in that area.

FYI, This plant is already under IAEA Safeguards wrt the Nuclear Deal when India separated its Military and Civilian Reactors.

Mate, You have right concerns but those concerns must be of a far far greater magnitude , accept it or not but, when u talk of ur own country where the World's Greatest Nuclear Prolifirator is Awarded Highest Civilian Award Twice.

You are specutating illogically to something that has already occoured in Pakistan.
Plz Dont Blame me for this. This is a Global Opinion No Just Me.
