NEW DELHI: Amidst concerns over the possibility of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal falling into the hands of terrorists, India has said it has no reason to doubt about their safety at this stage.

"At this stage yes, we have no reason to doubt that yet," minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor told a TV channel when asked if he took the Pakistani assessment that their nukes were safe at face value.

He further said, "We do not have first hand information on that (Pak nuclear weapons). Certainly, those who are very close to Pakistan seem to be convinced that there is nothing to be worried about."

To a question if India has its own contingency plan in case Pakistani nukes seem to be in danger of falling into the hands of terrorists, he said, "Look, we are not there yet. I am little anxious not to get into unnecessary alarmism at this point.

"Pakistan has a lot of difficulties, but they are not about to fall apart yet as a state and they are not about to have their army surrendering control of its most-prized military assets to irregulars. So, at this stage, this is not a concern but obvously this is a further argument for why the Prime Minister has repeatedly said a stable, peaceful Pakistan is in our interest too," Tharoor said.

During the last 25 years, Pakistan has developed an extensive nuclear weapons complex. Prior to its nuclear tests in May 1998, successive Pakistani governments tried to hide many aspects of its nuclear weapons program while simultaneously revealing enough to convince India and the rest of the world that it had workable nuclear weapons.

A result of this opaqueness is that Pakistan has released little information to the public about its complex of facilities devoted to making nuclear weapons. Typically, these activities include research, development, and testing of nuclear weapons, the production of plutonium and highly enriched uranium (HEU), the manufacture of nuclear weapons, and facilities for mating nuclear weapons to delivery systems, including aircraft and ballistic missiles.

Pakistan’s nuclear weapons are safe: Tharoor

NEW DELHI, Dec 6 (APP): Contradicting statements of his Prime Minister and Cabinet colleagues about safety of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, Shashi Tharoor, Indian Minister of State for External Affairs said on Sunday Pakistan’s nuclear weapons are safe. “We do not have first hand information on that. Certainly, those who are very close to Pakistan seem to be convinced that there is nothing to be worried about, “ Tharoor told Karan Thapar in his ‘Devil’s Advocate’ programme on CNN-IBN.

When asked terror groups such as LeT and Jaish-e Mohammed, found no mention in the US AF-P*K strategy, Tharoor said the US was not engaged in any operations against India’s “immediate enemies”.
To a question, Tharoor said there should be no distinction between al-Qaeda inspired terrorists and terror directed against India. “For us there is no difference between somebody who wants to kill people in Bali or Mumbai.”
Asked whether India can rely on Obama as he says “something to India and something else to Pakistan”, he said, “We are not relying on anybody to get this problem (of terrorism) solved.”
To a question on US policy towards resolution of Kashmir, Tharoor said the US has made several statements favouring resolution of Indo-Pak problem through dialogue between the two countries.
When asked about India’s concern on huge supply of US weapons to Pakistan since 9/11, he said, “what I want to say is that not every figure that we see is necessarily pointing in to a barrel pointed at India.”
Tharoor further said that India did not need to worry as Pakistan can buy whatever equipment it requires but “when it comes to conflict, we are prepared”.

So saying Pakistani nuke is safe by an Indian minister is your problem now??Or are you suggesting that Pakistan nukes are not safe??please clarify

Is India appeasing Pakistan so that it shuts up about India's own recent nuclear security risks?

Realistic.

By the way, I see that there is no uniformity of statements in Indian politicians either. One say something, other totally opposite. One claims Pakistani nukes are in threat from TTP and now the other says they are safe.

But one thing, Pakistani nukes are safe. No worries.
