On the day the legislators unanimously passed the resolution reiterating firm and unshakable faith in secularism, pluralism and tolerance, Jammu and Kashmirassembly speaker Kavinder Gupta came down heavily on the police for detaining two youth for unfurling Indian flag in Lal Chowk.
“I have come to know that police have arrested two youth for raising Indian flag at Lal Chowk earlier today. Those who raise Pakistani flag should be arrested and not those who raise the Indian flag” Gupta told the House.
Tension gripped the Lal Chowk this morning when shopkeepers downed their shutters after rumours spread that some youth were trying to unfurl a party flag. Police immediately swung into asction and took two youth into custody as a precautionary measure to avoid any law and order break down.
Police have not registered any case saying the duo Sachin Kumar and Gourav Ram of RS Pora area in Jammu did not commit any crime by trying to unfurl the national flag in Lal Chowk.
However, Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association suspended their work and staged a sit in on the road, outside the High Court complex to register their protest. The Association alleged some BJP workers had tried to unfurl party flag on the clock tower.
The high drama was witnessed on the day the legislators cutting across party and ideological lines unanimously passed the resolution in the Legislative Assemblyreiterating the firm and unshakable faith of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in its age-old tradition of secularism, pluralism and tolerance.
Moved by former chief minister Omar Abdullah, the resolution urged the “leadership at the national level across the party lines and seeks the support of the people throughout the country in creating an environment of peace and harmony so that all sections of the society become real stakeholders in the idea of India”.
“We are at the crossroads of history and have to again become torch-bearers of secularism, pluralism and tolerance in the country. The message of inclusiveness preached by great leaders must not get eclipsed by the action of those who create panic leading to insecurity amongst the minorities of the country”, said Mufti Mohommad Sayeed, J&K chief minister.
Earlier, police foiled the march of the supporters of independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid aka Engineer Rashid and detained some of them when they were marching towards assembly to protest against the beef ban.
