NEW DELHI: India's armed forces must fight the next war with indigenous solutions, Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat said today as he made a strong pitch for developing the domestic defence industry.

The army chief also called for greater synergy between industry and the armed forces to develop quality equipment and military platforms.

"Indian armed forces must fight the next war with indigenous solutions," he said while
addressing a seminar organised jointly by the army and the Indian Technical Textile
Association.

Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani told the gathering that the National Textile Corporation
will have a specialised facility to develop clothes and other gear for the armed forces.

"There must be effective engagement between the armed forces and the industry," the army chief added. He also referred to combat dress and boots being supplied to the US Army by the Indian private sector and said there was a lot of scope for cooperation between the army and the domestic textile industry for developing dress material and other gear for the forces


"There is huge budget with the Army that has been spent on textiles. It is high time that we look for indigenous solutions," he said.

His comments come two days after the defence ministry broadly finalised a muchawaited policy under which select private firms will be roped in to build military platforms like submarines and fighter jets in India in partnership with foreign entities.

India is a leading importer of arms and military platforms globally and the current government has been maintaining that indigenisation of defence manufacturing is a priority area.

Rawat said discussions at the seminar must not be confined to files and official papers and practical steps must be taken to boost cooperation between the armed forces and the textile industry.

Irani said there must be cohesive alignment of cooperation between the textile industry and the armed forces.

IIRC, there is a ban on usage of Chinese goods for the Ministry of Defense.

Some specialised gear clothing wise (cold weather etc) are imported from the west (normally). In fact the arctic gear company India imported from in the 80s for use in Siachen was also the one that Pakistan used later (tipping off India and thus scaled first to get to the top first).

Regular uniforms are all (or high majority) made in India currently. This article concerns only special warfare clothing...which of course there is strong demand and thus local production should always be sought when/if economically feasible. Unfortunately the article does not present itself on the issue well enough.

Being the second largest cotton producer in the world with a very little difference of produce with the first, do you still think that India need to import uniforms or other textiles ??? But if you want believe so, then yes.

Mind your language gentleman, racism doesn't solves anything.... every country in the world faces problems, even China is vulnerable to problems such as poverty, education and only after they got a booming economy were able to revive some population..... only 7% out of 1.25 billion people pay taxes, rest try to hide their earnings, India is a rich country and people who earn good money hide their money in form of gold or put their money into black economy, as a result govt assumes people to be below poverty line and people live their lives happily without paying taxes......People living in jhungis or huts have DTH and AC in their houses and are able to pay for bills and have iphones...and other good phones, they do shopping in malls and only 20% population of India maybe really in poverty....who knows...i have numerous examples....

India also produces & exports its apples to Nepal and Bangladesh.
But imports apples from China?
