India has said it may bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games after organisers stripped Durban of the event over its failure to meet key obligations.

With memories still fresh of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, which were plagued by delays and corruption, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said it was considering a repeat performance.

"We received a communication from them (Commonwealth Games Federation) today. Our president and members are discussing the issue," the Indian Express daily quoted IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta as saying on Wednesday.

"If there is support from the government we will consider the possibility of bidding for the Games."

On Monday Commonwealth Games chiefs said they were seeking a new venue after Durban was stripped of its right to host the Games for failing to stick to its original bid commitments.

The loss has sparked a political row in South Africa over the millions of rand spent on the project after winning the hosting right in 2015 amid much fanfare.

New Delhi successfully hosted two Asian Games in 1951 and 1982, but the 2010 Games were overshadowed by a string of corruption scandals involving top sports officials and budget overshoots.

The Commonwealth Games are restricted to countries that are members of the Commonwealth, a collection of nations that were mainly once part of the British Empire.

Australia's Gold Coast which will be hosting the 2018 edition has said it was ready to host back-to-back events if called upon to do so.

So far only Liverpool, in northwest England, has thrown its hat into the ring for 2022.

The Express quoted Mehta as saying he would meet with the head of the IOA soon to discuss the next step.

He refused to comment when contacted by AFP on Wednesday.

I mean we had a great opening ceremony in 2010. I'm sure our opening ceremony will be great for this too.

Time frame is too small to take a dive in and it won't be of any use...if it gets held again in Delhi!!

It is difficult but lot of infrastructure is already in place - Airport, Flyovers, Stadium, Metro, Hotel etc. If anyone can do it Modi can but only if Yugpurush cooperates

That's my point exactly...countries bid for these events so that they can upgrade existing infra in a massive way...!! Since Delhi infra is already at a matured stage...hosting this even doesn't add anything except for the tourist inflow!!
Forget about khujli....this is his last term!!

Other infra is for general use but specialized infra like stadium will become a white elephant if not used regularly.

We should aim to have atleast one major games - SAARC, Asian, Commonwealth, Olympics etc once a decade so that the infrastructure is well maintained.

People may question that why Delhi should always host the games - the unfortunate reality is that right now we cant afford to rebuild the full game infrastructure in other cities.

You need a big city to host the games with good stadiums, hotels, public transport, airport etc.

Considering this only few cities can qualify for hosting the games
1 Delhi
2 Mumbai
3 Hyderabad
4 Chennai
5 Bangalore
6 Kolkata

Delhi has obvious advantage as it has hosted 3 such games (2 Asian games, 1 Commonwealth) Along with this it has decent public transport in form of Metro.
The Airport of Delhi is also big and can accomodate the rush from the games

Mumbai also has good airport and public transport in form of local train but it is not suited for the games. Moreover the city is overcrowded and IMHO will not be able to handle the pressure of the games

Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai do not have good public transport. Their airports are big enough to handle the games rush.

Bangalore has a few Stadiums but nothing in the world class category except Chinnaswamy which is a cricket stadium

Hyderabad has some good stadiums like GMC Balayogi Atheletics Stadium, Gachibowli Indoor Stadium etc. If metro lines improve then it can be considered after a few years

Chennai also has some stadiums like SDAT Tennis Stadium, Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium etc. Like Hyderabad it will have to improve the metro connectivity plus it will have to seriously upgrade its airport

Kolkata has creaking infrastructure and the govt apathy makes it difficult place to host international tournaments

That's what I'm saying there is no use of conducting it again in Delhi....if you want to bid...go for another city and give em a chance to build infra!!

Building infra costs time and money. If you are trying for 2022 you cant go out of Delhi.

If you are going out of Delhi you can try for 2028 Olympics, 2030 Asian Games or 2026/2030 Commonwealth Games

I think Hyderabad would be good choice...it had huge swaths of barren land...!! And it has huge cosmopolitan population!!
I'm talking about building completely new city!! Smart city which is well integrated!! That would be ideal way to showcase to the rest of the world what India is made of!!

Hyderabad is good choice. Some infra already there + like you said barren land.

Too bad CBN is not there. CBN + Modi would have made it possible. I dont believe KCR can do what CBN did
