WASHINGTON: India could soon join a select group of countries like US, China and France which export nuclear reactors , a Congressional report has said.

"Only Canada , China, France, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and the United States export nuclear reactors. India may join this group in the near term," the Congressional Research Service (CRS) said in its latest report 'Nuclear Energy Cooperation with Foreign Countries Issue for Congress.'

CRS is the independent and bipartisan research wing of the US Congress , which prepares periodic report on issues of interest to the lawmakers.

According to World Nuclear Association, India is offering its indigenous 220 and 540 megawatt heavy water reactor designs for export, although no specific customers have been identified.

The CRS report said only a limited number of countries conduct commercial enrichment and reprocessing of fissile materials and can supply this technology.

At present, supplier states are not planning any transfers of enrichment or reprocessing technology. The Nuclear Suppliers Group recently added criteria to its guidelines for the supply of fuel cycle technologies.

"Commercial reprocessing is now being done in France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, and India."

China has a pilot plant and is "considering a large-scale facility... South Korea is pursuing a research and development program on pyro-processing," the report said.

"Some countries with few natural energy resources, such as Japan, argue that they want to reprocess their spent fuel to reduce dependence on foreign energy sources. Reprocessing proponents in those countries prefer a closed fuel cycle, in which spent nuclear fuel from reactors is used to make fuel for other reactors; opponents raise questions about proliferation risks and high economic costs," it said.

Well considering that our Thorium fast breeder reactor technology is on track and that it will be materializing soon, there might come a time that we might not be depending on uranium so exclusively at all. We even offered Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam our reactors in 220 KW range and upwards as smaller and cheaper reactors are needed for small towns and cities of these countries in Southeast Asia.

About time we join the league.

awesome news! i hope this happens soon. i guess the reactors which we will export will use thorium as fuel. we have already built some reactors which use thorium as fuel.

I wonder what the profit margins are like.

Difficult to say in this sector. But in this range of reactor technology, only China along with India can make "economically priced" reactors. I was reading up on the N-Plants coming up in India, although the rector tech for the bigger reactors is coming from western nations, all the other structures and equipment was coming from China. Since the margins seem to be only in the reactor, I'm sure they will be significantly marked up.

LOL... report needs to get updated... we are already on path

India, Canada to sell N-reactors together

India is reportedly pursuing a lucrative partnership with Canada to sell nuclear reactors in new markets. A deal announced last year in Toronto by prime ministers Stephen Harper and Manmohan Singh, will eventually clear the way for Canadian uranium to be exported to India once Canada ratifies
it.

Presently, India is pursuing joint ventures with Canada's nuclear industry.

"We do think there is a good possibility for us to cooperate in third countries, which would be possible once all these things are sorted out," Indian high commissioner Shashishekhar Gavai said.

"We have developed our own technology over the years. We could bring your expertise and our expertise together, and go into third countries where they require reactors," Gavai said.

Yeah that sounds about right. The reactors are the most expensive part, the fuel is cheap.

Luckily, we are selling the reactors, and not the fuel. :P

HaHa never forget PAKISTAN , It is capable of this business since 1990:bounce::rofl::bounce::rofl:

We are happy for you if you have any pakistan designed and developed Nuke reactors in your country, but the topic has nothing to do with you or your countries super manufacturing capability to export it even before the countries whom you buy it from even today did...

well didn't the western Media weep for a long time concerning Pakistan Nuke Business with IRAN and Korea, our special Centrifuge Technology has no doubt many Secret costumers ,but Pakistan make it all to Halt for lesser Nukes spreading in the whole world

My question to you is, does Pakistan design and develop nuke reactors?? As far as India, Even Pvt companies do, and our pvt companies have built reactors for foreign countries as well... So please, if you have it, say it... Dont fool around saying technology, every said nation in the list has that technology way back...

Centrifuge Technology is a different ball game. It can be used for military purposes as well. Reactors talked about here is for a nuclear power plant.

2-3 years back, there were rumors of selling CANDU to India..
