(Reuters) - India has become so desperate for fresh stocks of the onions it uses in spicy curries that it is turning to regional rival China and sanctions-hit Iran for supplies, and there is even talk of airlifts to ease soaring prices.

But despite a swirl of high-level meetings on Thursday, the government is unlikely to land imports in substantial quantities before state elections begin on November 11, with state-run firms struggling to clinch deals and private players risk-averse.

Indians eat their way through 15 million tonnes of onions a year, using them as the base for traditional dishes such as biryani and bhaji. This has made high prices a hot potato that has in the past contributed to the fall of state governments.

Retail prices of onions have quadrupled in three months - now costing over 100 rupees a kilo, which is what a third of the population live on per day - as a supply squeeze caused by wet weather has hampered harvests.

Farm and food ministers met with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss ways to curb galloping prices in the Indian capital.

Onion prices were a major factor in pushing inflation to a seven-month high in September of 6.46 percent, and the government, led by the Congress party, is facing heated calls in the media to bring prices down by whatever means.

India has never before imported onions by air but Farm Minister Sharad Pawar proposed just that on Wednesday because sea transport takes longer and so cannot replenish supplies as fast, thereby bringing down prices.

Elections in the capital and in the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram kick off in November.

"The state-run agencies are floating import tenders, but supplies are likely to come only after 3-4 weeks," said Changdev Holkar, a director at the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation.

"And quantity would be also miniscule compared to demand."

Private traders won't rescue the world's No. 2 producer and consumer because they know prices could quickly fall - farmers have planted far and wide to reap the benefit of high prices.

"Onions are highly perishable. Once you import, you have to sell at whatever price is prevailing in the market. You can't wait for prices to rise," said Ajit Shah, president of the onion exporters' association.

And even stopping exports won't help matters, because they have already shrunk to just a trickle.

"Our prices are too high. Buyers are switching to Pakistan and China," said a Mumbai-based exporter. Indian onions cost $900 per tonne whereas $570 will buy you a tonne from China.

Pawar stuck to basic supply-demand economics on Thursday to bring relief. "Supplies from the new season crop would start in two to three weeks and that would depress prices," he said.

He might be disappointed, though. Heavy rains are expected in the next few days in big onion-growing states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka - and that could be disastrous, Holkar said, disrupting harvesting and damaging the crop.

"Right now, imports or restrictions on exports cannot change the demand-supply equation. Dry weather for two to three weeks can increase supplies and bring down prices," said Shah.

Chinese onions ? ............plzzz make sure they are not fake.

India looks to China even if there is a chance of getting "fake" onion which means India is so DESPERATE !!! India needs China's help so badly. Why doesn't India go to USA and Russia for help since these two countries are considered friends by Indians ?

India has very fertile soil as well as vast water resources and climate conducive to farming. An onion shortage is absolutely absurd, considering the ease of growing onions and the vast market and demand for them.
As usual, someone somewhere has fooked up or the Agricultural ministry is run by retards.

This is not the first time it is happening in India. Indian politicians are corrupt to the core that is why they first export the same product and and if required then import the same.

Its a short term seasonal shortage, compounded by clueless agriculture ministry that cant buld proper supplychain and storage.

The reason for the import of onions now is the fact that elections are approaching.

Funny democracy :D

.
It is no shame to import onions or any agricultural products from other countries.

We (Canadians) import GARLIC (can you imagine we have to import garlic!!!) from China, apple juice. All kings of veggies from Mexico. Fruits from the US.

It is international farming. There really is no boundary.

The fact of the matter is that the price has been artificially raised to fund the election campaigns of the Congress and the NCP. Once they've made a killing and the political coffers are full, these idiots will gradually release the hoarded stocks into the market.

Right now the menu, instead of showing 'Mutton do piazza', now shows 'Mutton no piazza'!! :(

You see, everyone is in cahoots - the politicians, traders, agents, middlemen, bureaucrats! Total slush money made so far is 3,200 crores!!!

We suck!! Because these very same fookers will be voted back to power in 2014!

Mera Bharat Mahaan!! The new banana republic on the block!

WHile price is hovering around 100 bucks the wholesale price is barely touching 40 bucks .. the rest is going to that faggoty mouth agri minister pawar !! Shame on congress !

"After weeks I ate onions today with bhindi," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Saturday, admitting that the skyrocketing price of the vegetable had affected her kitchen too.

Dikshit's comments were made at a press conference at her official residence, where she explained various measures taken by her government to contain prices of onion, which has been selling for Rs 100 per kg.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party immediately hit out at Dikshit, calling her remark a "white lie".

"Dikshit is telling a lie. She knows the people of Delhi are angry with her government because of high onion prices and it will impact the Congress in the elections. That is why she is trying to play the emotional card," said senior Delhi BJP leader Vijender Gupta.

"The comments also reflected her inability to contain the prices of onion. In a way, she has given the message that if the price of a vegetable or commodity is high, do not eat it," said the former Delhi BJP president.

In her briefing, the chief minister said people have been affected by high prices of the kitchen staple and exuded confidence that the rates will come down significantly in the next few days as a number of steps are being initiated by her government.

Both BJP and the Aam Admi Party have been attacking Dikshit over rocketing onion prices.

The BJP government was voted out of power in 1998 following high onion prices.

Chinese onions ? ............plzzz make sure they are not fake.

China is the largest onion producer in the world. It produces more onion than the next six country combined. Also, onion is not part of the staple food in China, so it would make sense for India to import onions from China.

Also remember that India population is very large, so modern agriculture is needed to feed its people and modern agriculture requires machines, fertilizers, treated seeds, insecticide, etc. These in turn ties into stuff like petroleum import, chemical refinement, transportation infrastructure, power supply, etc. It is a rather involved process.
