India leader to visit Sri Lanka as pro-China policy ebbs

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sri Lanka in March, a government spokesman said, amid signs the island nation is shifting from its heavy pro-China policy.

Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said Thursday that the March 13-15 visit will be the first by an Indian head of state in 27 years.

The new Sri Lankan president, Maithripala Sirisena, returned from a visit to India this week, his first trip overseas, and highlighted the improving ties that had soured because of Sri Lanka's closeness to China under the previous administration.

Sirisena won a surprise victory last month against former ally Mahinda Rajapaksa, who relied heavily on China for infrastructure projects and backing against human rights allegations at the United Nations.

China's increasing influence in Sri Lanka had made India anxious because it considers the Indian Ocean region to be its strategic backyard.

China has provided loans for an airport, sea port, highways and power plants in Sri Lanka, where it became the largest investor. The new government, however, announced it would investigate a $1.5 billion Colombo Port City project, constructed on an artificial island off Colombo, because of suspicions it was not transparent.

The deal was sealed last September when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Sri Lanka and won Colombo's support for a proposed maritime "Silk Road" linking China with Europe.

The late Rajiv Gandhi was the last Indian leader to visit Sri Lanka in 1987 to sign a peace pact to end an ethnic Tamil separatist rebellion still in its infancy. India sent peacekeepers to Sri Lanka as part of that agreement, angering the Tamil Tiger rebels whose suicide bomber assassinated Gandhi in 1991 at an election rally.

The rebels were crushed by Sri Lankan soldiers in 2009. China assisted Sri Lanka in the civil war by providing arms and later defended the country at the U.N Human Rights Council against allegations of abuses in the civil war. [ my comment: In contrast, India armed, trained and funded the Tamil Tigers, refused to sell weapons to Sri Lanka, refused a complete defence relationship, took no action against Indian politicians cheerleading the LTTE, voted against Sri Lanka not once but twice at the United Nations, PM refused to attend the Commonwealth meeting in Sri Lanka, interfered in Sri Lanka's political affairs. ]

Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Sri Lanka in 2008, but only to participate in a summit of South Asian leaders.

No I am not "brutally hurted" - I am simply against Sri Lanka turning into a vassal state of India.

. .
But you are OK with Sri Lanka turning into a vassal state of China ..... right .

Nope. Never was a vassal state of China. India has stabbed Sri Lanka in the back multiple times and has and continues to treat Sri Lanka as a vassal state. China, on the other hand, has always extended a hand of friendship. Xi Jinping, president of China has no hesitation in visiting in Sri Lanka while the Indian PM can't even attend a commonwealth meeting.
.
Sri Lanka's current president is India's bitch.

His logic would go like this ...
If Srilanka has good relation with India=> Vassal State of India
If Srilanka has good relation with China => Independence

Nope. India interferes in Sri Lanka's internal affairs, and interfered even in the recent presidential elections. Just part of a long history of sticking their fingers in the internal affairs of other countries, not to forget sponsoring terrorist groups like the Tamil Tigers. Now their poodle Maithripala Sirisena in power in Sri Lanka and that is why he is bowing and scraping before India, ingratiating himself before his masters.

The only ones who will call their own President as another countries b!tch will be the one who are usually butt hurt supporters of the opponent candidate .

That looks like the case .

Maithripala Sirisena is India's bitch. He is the "common candidate" that India's intelligence services gave their seal of approval to. And that is why he is so eager to please India, and why Modi is in such a hurry to visit Sri Lanka and sign deals with him - in India's interests of course. The current Sri Lankan government's anti-China crusade makes no sense at all given that China has stood by Sri Lanka steadfastly during the war and after the war not only economically, but militarily and politically (unlike India). It is obvious India is pulling strings through Sri Lanka's puppet president and through the influence it has wrought through playing politics in the island.

Mahinda Rajpakse had reneged 13th Ammendment to constitution, That is why Indian PM has not visited commonwealth meeting.

Let me tell you this loud and clear , India do not want srilanka to be divided on ethnic lines but it want some sort of federal features in Srilanka so that Tamil reintegrate with Srilanka with new vigour.

We will only look after our interests it's common sense ..... just like China will look after their interest .

Just like Sirisena had Indian approval , I am sure it was Indians who voted him into power .

India is the one that reneged on the Indo-Lanka Accord by failing to disarm the Tamil Tigers.

Well, as long as YOU say that "loud and clear". Phew. Here I was getting all worried. All sorted then.

Yes. India has looked after her interests. Sri Lanka is turning into a puppet state of India.

1. Modi has visited Nepal two times in 9 months, previous to him India PM has not visited Nepal almost 20-30 years. Modi want to improve relation with neighbours.

2. No one in India is saying that Srilanka should turn into anti-China instead invite Chinese and their investment in Infrastructure .That is good for Srilanka but don't let their submarines to station in your ports. This was truely anti-India. It endangers security of India.

We don't like any Global power to have control in Indian ocean for e.g. Diago Garcia by USA
