India knocked out of tank contest in Russia after T-90s develop snags

Both Indian tanks broke down due to mechanical snags while those of Russia, China, Belarus and Kazakhstan raced to the final round.

The Indian Army has been eliminated from a multi-nation tank competition in Russia after both its T-90 main battle tanks developed technical problems at the Alabino ranges in the Moscow region.

The army had sent two T-90s – a main tank and a reserve one – and a 21-man crew for the tank biathlon at the 2017 International Army Games in Russia. Army officers said India had a good start at the biathlon but the Indian Army was disqualified from the competition after both Russian-origin tanks broke down during the penultimate round.

The officers said the main tank’s fan belt broke, while the other failed to perform after its engine oil leaked. China with its Type-96B tank and Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan with different T-72 variants raced to the last round of the competition in which 19 countries took part. Other participants included Azerbaijan, Angola, Armenia, Belarus, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Iran and Mongolia.

Degraded engine performance of T-90s, the mainstay of India’s tank fleet, is a concern for the army. The tanks are unable to operate for sustained periods in high temperatures due to radiator problems, revealed a report by the army design bureau earlier this year.

India joined the games three years ago but this has been the first time it had taken its own tanks for the competition. In the past, Russia had provided its tanks for the Indian team.

India was among the 12 teams that made it to the semi-final in the three-stage games. Belarus, China, Kazakhstan and Russia will now compete in the final stage. “The competition involves firing on tanks on the move by conventional machine guns and anti-tank projectiles at a range of two kilometres, while negotiating rugged obstacles,” an Army source said.

May be taking Indian tanks was not such a good idea. Previously, they always used tanks provided to them by the Russians for these games, only Indian personal went to participate. This time they decided to bring there own tanks to the competition.

Indian staffs are all geared for the "cold start", and ready to fight till the "last NA thug Afgan"!!!!! If it's like "hot" or "finish" or "Hakiki Afgan" the results aren't defined!!!!!!

The team had mechanics traveling with them as well. Strange why India chose to bring T90 to compete against T-72s or equivalent from ALL other participants. This was not a fair fight by any given standard.

Irfan bhai, Its just a ploy by us evil bhartis to lure the mighty Chineese into a trap. I dont know whats the gaga is all about from Pakistanis. Mightly Al-Khalids never even participated in the biathalon. Maybe from next year onwards Pakistani crews should also participate in this event.
Yeah its a shame that both tanks broke down and we were kicked out of the competition. But we have all seen what our crews achieved during the few rounds which we contested till the end.

It wasn't 'Indian stuff' though (per se), but I agree with the point you raised there.

just like SU 30 MKI is also not Indian "per se" but just because it is operated by Indians so Indians are selectively all praise to this jet but normally call the same jet as junk over the internet if its operated by other air forces because they are lacking your ancient superior technology

Al Khalid tank will do better than Arjunk

1. Its made by two countries and other countries expressed interest in purchase or bought over.

2. Its not downgraded for export

I guess you are talking about the older Su 27 variants in use by PLAAF, but they are indeed less advanced since their electronic components are older Russian origin whereas MKI variants use European components of newer design!!
