India inks deal to launch 23 foreign satellites

SRIHARIKOTA: India has signed up contracts to launch 23 foreign satellites soon, an official of Antrix Corporation said here on Monday.

Antrix Corporation is the commercial arm of Indian space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

"Out of 23 foreign satellites, two will go in two separate rockets. The remaining 21 satellites will piggy-back on bigger Indian satellite," the official told IANS.

He said ISRO would soon be launching six Singapore satellites weighing a total of around 660 kg.

According to him, the bigger of the six is an earth observation satellite, weighing 410 kg. Two are micro-satellites, weighing 130 kg and 80 kg respectively.

The remaining three are nano-satellites, cumulatively weighing 30 kg.

According to the Antrix Corporation official, ISRO will also be launching five small satellites from the US before 2016 as a piggy-back luggage.

since we are launching multiple satellites in one go.... it means we have our hand already in MIRV...

Well I was going through projects of ISRO, and I found that GSAT 9 is due to be launched this year by a GSLV. GSAT 9 is some 2,300kgs, if we squeeze in one of the foreign satellites on it, then a successful launch would mean that a lot of confidence in India's space abilities in foreign customers.

More sense than haters can understand,and yea its a good way of validation of mirv warhead hypothetical but any expert here please compare mirv with launch of satellite.

The reason why India is yet to rake in big money out of foreign satellite launches is that because most of these foreign satellites are light satellites (less than 1600 kg) and for India to begin making a significant dent in the space-launch industry, worth $3 billion, it must be able to lob heavy communication satellites that are at least four tonnes.

More than 80% of the revenues from satellite launches come from heavy satellites.

Indian scientists work on a fifth of the salaries of their counterparts in space agencies in Europe and the United States. These low costs are reflected in the entire ecosystem of manufacturers that include nearly 400 Indian private companies making different parts of the rockets and satellites. ISRO is frequently able to offer satellite launches at 75% of the cost of space agencies in the West.

ISRO made $100 million from launching 45 commercial satellites in space. That is however money made (and not profits) over eight years and by comparison Arianespace, a French company and the dominant player in the commercial space launch market reported revenues of €1.399 and a €3 million profit just last year.
