New Delhi, Feb 25 (efe-epa).- India is in talks with Bangladesh for the return of Rohingya refugees who have been adrift on a boat, without food or water, in the Andaman Sea for several days, the foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The boat carrying 64 women and 24 men, including 13 minors, left Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh two weeks ago and has been stranded at sea since Feb. 15 due to engine failure.

“We are in discussions with the government of Bangladesh to ensure their safe and secure repatriation,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava at a press conference.

“Due to severe conditions, we understand that eight occupants have died and one of the occupants has been missing since the 15th of February,” the spokesperson said.

Srivastava added that upon learning of the situation of the stranded Rohingyas, India “immediately dispatched two coastguard ships to provide food, water and medical assistance to the occupants.”

“Seven of them were also administered IV fluids,” he further said.

The ministry revealed that some 47 refugees have identification cards issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Bangladesh stating that they were “displaced Myanmar nationals and persons of concern”.

This situation is reminiscent of the refugee crisis of 2015, when thousands of Rohingyas were adrift on ships for weeks after the authorities in Thailand and Malaysia dismantled the networks that trafficked or smuggled them to these countries from Myanmar, where they are persecuted.

After the dismantling of the network smuggling people, the transit of such boats has declined significantly, although last year Indonesia rescued several straded vessels carrying Rohingyas from refugee camps in Bangladesh.

The coastguards of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia had initially stopped these vessels from landing on their respective coasts, but a group of fishermen from Aceh rescued several boats, against the orders of the Indonesian navy, before the authorities agreed to allow the refugees to disembark.

Nearly 738,000 Rohingya refugees fled Bangladesh following a wave of persecution and violence in Myanmar by the army since August 2017, which the UN described as ethnic cleansing and genocide. EFE-EPA

I am a descendant of such boat refugees.

I don't understand how if an alien people, the Hindus, can welcome us on their land, why would Bangladesh not take in on to their own soil their own blood brothers?

What is the issue here? Why did these people have to set off from Bangladesh on this flimsy boat?

Give them shelter. It's the human thing to do.

Cheers, Doc

We already host more than what India hosts...
Your country is empty on the east... it’s easier for you to host

Have been since the late 70's, before this problem even became a thing or an international concern.

So did this boat drift of course or something? Its said they set off from Cox's Bazar. Set off where? That too so many women and children in such a flimsy boat.

Cheers, Doc

Be reasonable.

Why should we host Bangladeshis?

You got an independent country in 1947.

You got another shot at even greater independence in 1971.

So why should India host your people?

Cheers, Doc

They were going to Malaysia or Australia. Before they were in Bangladesh. The thing is Rohingyas are Myanmar citizen. Bangladesh can not take them from outside every time if any crisis happen as it relieves Myanmar from taking back Rohingyas and making them a concern for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Army Infantry and Bangladesh Navy SWADS are quite adept at amphibious landings.

We do not need to import Rohingyas to perform this role. India can keep them.

Don't be heartless.

Do you remember the grisly photo of the drowned child during the refugee crisis to Europe?

I've lost count of the number of puppies and kittens and injured birds my kids have adopted just because leaving them elsewhere or on the road or untended would mean their death. Over the years.

This is not human.

Cheers, Doc

They are your people and you must take their responsibility. We had to go to war over a similar issue so it's not a small problem.

Since when they were our people? On humanitarian ground we took them but it’s not our responsibility rather it’s the responsibility of Myanmar.

Send them back to Myanmar if you don't need them

. .
That’s what we are trying to do with dialogue and engaging with UN at the moment.
That part I know, what will we do with the stranded people in the mean time.one thing is certain we cannot take them.

That’s yours and Myanmar’s problem not ours. We took them when they were in Bangladeshi border but we can’t take them when they are in Indian sea water.

Taken them and negotiate with Myanmar to return them. Isn’t your country a so called secular one?

If they are in Indian waters they could not have come without passing BD waters.

And yours is secular country narrative dsnt sell anymore, we want to keep it secular and don't want to take anymore aliens who are a threat to secularism.
