The largest coal company in the world has announced that it will be shutting down 37 of its sites. The move is fueled by the increasing affordability of solar power.
ON ITS WAY OUT
Things are not looking good for the coal industry. In the latest blow to this fossil fuel, the world biggest coal company is closing a total of 37 mines. It seems that the rise of solar power is playing a major role in the decline of coal. The company, Coal India, produces 82 percent of India’s coal, according to The Independent. The closings account for nine percent of Coal India’s sites.

The Indian government has recently shifted from coal to cleaner, renewable sources, most notably solar power. Just last week, the government announced that it has abandoned plans for building another coal power station with Chimanbhai Sapariya. T,he country’s energy minister noted that “Our focus is now on renewable energy. The government will encourage solar power.” The prices of solar power continue to plummet as technology and government incentives work to make renewable energy more attractive.

India is leading the way in a renewable energy revolution. Analyst Tim Buckley said, “Measures taken by the Indian government to improve energy efficiency coupled with ambitious renewable energy targets and the plummeting cost of solar has had an impact on existing as well as proposed coal-fired power plants, rendering an increasing number as financially unviable.”

CLEAN AIR
A recent story by the New York Times showed that India’s air pollution crisis is responsible for the deaths of around 1.1 million people in the country every single year, rivaling China as the deadliest in the world. The decline of coal being burned for power will only improve the air quality, saving more lives as efforts move toward cleaner energy. In another historic move, the country has pledged to ensure that every car sold in India by 2030 will be electric.

This combination will be a one-two punch to the deadly pollution plaguing the country. A new population report from the UN released last week foresees that India’s population will continue to boom and is projected to surpass China’s 1.4 billion by 2024. That increased population is going to add to the country’s energy needs and we need to be prepared to meet it with clean energy from renewable sources.

Interesting. Pakistan is now going towards the coal route. Desperate attempts by current government to tackle electricity shortfall rather than investing in renewable energy.

This is significant since, India is one of the biggest green houses producer in the world. It'd be even better if China and that orange orangutan take such steps.

Indians, huh.....there is a whole new world outside of your well, wake up Indians:close_tema:

Pakistani government decisions are being driven by what Chinese can or want to supply you

This is the right approach of GoP. I don't know how efficient they are doing but Coal is the cheapest way of producing energy. Once there are sustaining economic dividends you may shift to renewable energy.

There is saying 'More you burn the Coal, More you become Rich'.

Actually move on with Coal for next 20 years. Coal is bound to get cheaper and maybe with excess capacity where you can import.
I on the other hand sincerely hope India does not stupidly decide to stop building coal power plants by 2022. Currently there are lots of thermal plants under construction. The reason is we still have percentage of unelectrified villages in our country, and when the "poor" rise to "middle", his standard of living will rise and it becomes important to provide 24*7 electricity with no low voltage problems. And only Coal will help us achieve it.

Until unless the rich countries follow up on their pledge to provide renewable energy with subsidised costs, we should follow up on coal. If they are alarmed by Global warming then they need to do something instead of asking developing nations to do something. @salimpheku

Excellent development. Hope the trend continues. No need to make this an India vs China thread. China is making giant strides in renewable energy as well. In fact it is the Chinese who have increased solar panel production to such levels that the technology is now affordable for everyone and we should be thankful for that. Also, China is making strides in electric cars which we should learn from.

Chinese are dumping their legacy coal power capacity on you guys. I have repeatedly mentioned it. Apparently a wish to see cleaner air in Pakistan makes me the enemy.

Haha. It is amazing to see the level of propaganda in Hindustan today. The coal sites are being shut down because there is a glut of coal production and Coal India Ltd is trying to clear its inventories. At the same time, Hindustan has built too many power plants but neither can its distribution network handle the load nor do the common Hindustanis have enough cash to purchase the electricity produced by the coal plant. This is nothing but economic mismanagement.

So what can the Modi government do? It spins it as an attempt to shut the coal mines to promote green energy and claim political mileage out of an economic blunder.

No wonder India has more poor people than all of Africa put together.
What is the meaning of this post in this thread?
How is reducing dependency on coal related to poverty?
Are you :cuckoo:
