Bingo. The LOC has rarely ever been quite. There is always firing, pushing, prodding, testing, small scale skirmishes happening all the time. But recently we saw the dawn of the 'sirjikal' era. That is what was routine on LOC was sold as 'Sirjikial' and Indian media went into overdrive on a marketing exercise. Expect the same and a Bolly movie.

Modi can then swagger "we did this" and 1.4 billion Indians will walk few inches taller ....

What the Indian public deserve instead of publicity stunt 'Sirjikal' or Bolly fantasy is either -

  • a tactical Indian Army battlegroup attacks at some point on the international border and penetrates at least 15 miles into Pakistan and then the flanks are secured creating a visible bulge inside Pakistan. That is then used as a negotiating point to apply real pressure on Pakistan. This would be visible retribution and place Pakistan in very difficult position.

  • or in absence of that a air assault by commandos on a strategic point in Pakistan that kills somebody prominent like Hafiz Saeed inside Pakistan similiar to how US took out OBL. This would even warrant a movie from Bollywood.

The wave of TTP terrorism that swept Pakistan over the last decade has few equals, and while Pakistan did allege 'external support' as being a factor, never did the government descend to this level of hysteria and warmongering (that India engages in after every militant attack in India) against even Afghanistan.

There were many of us who were extremely critical of the government and Army (and some who continue to be) of not launching some kind of strikes into sanctuaries in Afghanistan, yet the government stuck to an official policy of restraint in both statements and action. Personally I agree with the position that the GoP and Military took, of not overtly striking inside Afghanistan. The main issue was, and is, controlling the borders and improving domestic intelligence gathering and pre-emptive security operations (IBO's). Yes, Pakistan was and is critical of the TTP, JuA, BLA leadership finding sanctuary in Afghanistan, but we still talk of cooperation with Afghanistan while simultaneously improving our internal anti-terrorist capabilities. It is the domestic security operations that have brought about an improvement in security, not some fanciful 'surgical strikes' in Afghanistan or GoP led Anti-Afghan/India war-hysteria.
