India has very high population density compared to Pakistan. The India seems to be following China's lead to slow down population growth.

In an effort to curb India’s high birth rate, the government is offering to pay newly married couples to postpone having children.

The Indian population stands at about 1.2 billion people and the demographic is proportionally young with more than half that number under 25 years old, the New York Times reports. In order to keep its population an asset to the country’s growth and stop it from becoming a crippling burden, India’s government is paying about 5,000 rupees (about CAD$100) to couples to wait until they have children, promising that more resources will be available to the child if they wait.

India’s birth rate is 2.6 children per family or 21.34 births per 1,000 people. Canada’s rate by comparison is 10.28 births per 1,000 people and China’s is 12.7 per 1,000. Some economists predict that India will surpass China in economic growth rates within five years because China’s population is getting older and India’s workforce is only getting bigger, the Times reports. India’s population is also expected to surpass China’s within the next decade.

But some demographers say India’s efforts are coming too late and its booming population will soon become a burden as resources resources such as food and government services such as schooling wear thin.

From the Times:

“It’s already late,” said Sabu Padmadas, a demographer with the University of Southampton who has worked extensively in India. “It’s definitely high time for India to act.”

Along with cash bonuses, local health authorities are trying to curb teenage marriages and promoting the use on contraceptives. Since 2009, 2,366 couples in the town of Satara have enrolled in the bonus program, which has been dubbed the “honeymoon package.”

In Satara, the birthrate has fallen to about 1.9 children per family, partly because of the honeymoon package, with many women opting for sterilization after their second child.

One doctor says he expects the majority of the births will come from India’s poorest states, where much of the population is uneducated and malnourished.

“An educated girl is your best contraception,” said Dr. Amarjit Singh, executive director of the National Population Stabilization Fund.

Just not possible for India to tell its people how many kids to have. The people will never stand it and no government can survive such a decision. Manmohan Singh is no Deng Xiaopeng. The only way to slow the Indian population juggernaut to raise living standards and average income.

.
The Indian government should not have banned sex determination tests that resulted in millions of abortions. People have the right to choose the sex of their child and the dowry culture makes it imperative. India will remain dirt poor even if it has top 20 GDP in the world.

Of course, no Government of India can force people to have less children. But it is giving the new couples incentive to have children little later so as to decrease a sudden demographic burden. But in cities people already observe family planning of having just one or two child maximum as this gives opportunity to the parents to give their children better education and opportunities. And this phenomenon is also spreading in rural areas slowly. As the urbanization increases, so will the family planning and a consequent decrease in birth rates.

ya, that's why he's not telling them not to have children...he's basically telling them have it a bit later (n I'll give you some cash????). Let's see. the government line till now has been 'we two ours two'. They can't go beyond rhetoric or they'll get slaughtered in a democratic set up.

That is the most stupid suggestion. If India were not to ban the sex determination tests then there will be much more female infanticide and subsequent gender inequality as a proportion of population. Dowry is prevalent only in a few sections of society. The reason for female infanticide is not due to dowry problem but because of the desire of parents having a male heir who can take care of them when they get old.

Nope. Girls have the right to life as much as boys. It's the culture and dowries that need to go, not the baby girls. China banned sex determination and it's a good thing India did too.

It is a right decision to control the birth rate in India

One child policy was the second worst thing ever happened in PRC (cultural revolution was of course the worst). I hope India doesn't head down to the same path.

I think this is a good way for trying to curb the population growth. Agressive population growth tampers with economic prosperity and poverty reduction in most poor countries as well as in India and Pakistan.
In the case of Pakistan and India growing pupulation pose a great threat for the countries' well-being . In 20 years time Pakistans population will dubble to 350 million, so the leaders of the country should come up with a plan to counter it. Add to this the shortage of water and less habitable ground (only the Indus area is mostly viable), Pakistan is taking a dangerous path, if it doesn't act decisively.

I was just checking to see the response. I believe that girls are more precious than boys. I am against abortion so aborting female fetuses is abhorrent to my principles. Indians in Canada have told me that parents must have the right to choose the gender of the child. Many Sikh families have only one son. The female infanticide in last two decades will cause shortage of women in Punjab and Haryana states of India and may raise the value of female babies. In Pakistan, many tribes make marriage unions where one girl from each clan is married to groom of the other clan. So your son cannot be married if you do not have daughter to marry their family. This tradition is called "Atta Batta".

A govt that forces such a policy is...well..slaughtered. I mean you won't even find residual traces of the government. I guess there's no alternative but to contantly persevere and slowly keep winning more and more people to your side.
