India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) gave its final approval on 20 October for the procurement of 145 BAE Systems M777 155 mm/39-calibre lightweight howitzers for the Indian Army (IA) for around USD750 million under the US Foreign Military Sales programme.

India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by defence minister Manohar Parrikar, sanctioned the purchase of towed M777 guns and Selex Laser Inertial Artillery Pointing Systems after clearing the final contract price, MoD officials said.

Pre-negotiated offset contracts worth some USD200 million were also approved.

The DAC had already approved the M777 purchase in June, but its re-endorsement became necessary following cost issues flagged by India's Ministry of Finance.

145 seems like very few doesn't it? Are there plans for follow on orders/local production? We haven't bought artillery in ages, even Pakistan has more arti guns at this point.

Pakistan doesn't have anything in this category. India will build more under MII... this will be used mostly in the mountainous areas so my guess is large numbers are not really necessary. ..

Artillery has been Indian military's weak point for many years. Acquiring K-9 and M-777 means IA is getting serious about its Artillery now.

Bofors really spooked the hell of out of our govt! It'll take some till we get to the desired level!

645 is the minimum number of M777s the IA will order.

These M777s will be Made in India, fully in line with "Make in India".
