India forced to import 124 T-90 tanks from Russia.

why cant any of our our Defence PSUs ever do things on time.. the whole country gets f***d up for their slowpoke chalta hai attitude. Be it HAL or OFBs everything needs a complete overhaul. We need professional folks with time managed solutions not decades of delays.

Sadly we end up paying more for such atrocious delays.. ppl should not forget its tax payers money only which is used so of course it should be used more wisely and in better fashion rather than use it bcz of mismanagement and delays. An enquiry needs to be done and strict action needs to be taken

Only time bound quality performance should guarantee more work or else kick out the management
which govt department ( except a few exception) rerally works and works on time. they are our privileged children born to drink our blood!

All the East Asian countries went through the "copying" process, mass manufacturing, low currency, infrastructure building....and authoritarian government.

In the early 80s, Taiwan used to be famous for making very good quality fake Omega and Rolex watches. These fake watches were all over Malaysia. The joke was seeing a man wearing a Rolex watch but taking a bus to work !

I remember I was having a business dinner in Taipei and my Taiwanese host lamenting how if only Taiwanese could use their skill (in making fake) to better use, Taiwan would be so much greater.

And now look at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC)! It is the world's largest chip foundry.

But there is a flip side. Most private defense contractors have flourishing R&D departments in USA. That does not exist in India. Most Indian private companies do not even have full-fledged R&D departments, let alone hire PhDs.

In IITs and IISc Bangalore, PhD students and JRFs earn around Rs20000. But very few Indian companies hire PhDs to staff their R&D. And PhDs from places like IISc Bangalore, JNCASR or IIT Bombay are really good. Obviously they are not MIT material, but they are at par with graduates from mid-ranked American universities.
I am pursuing my own doctorate in an engineering field from a top 5 ranked university, and did my undergrad from one of India's best universities. I have met several Indian PhDs, and many are impressive.

With the way Russian economy is going and how China is giving it support, Indians will only see it in the passing Russian technology going to the Chinese.

Soon, China will buy everything real cheap. It wont need to do cyber attacks.

Oh sorry, I missed a zero, it is Rs.25000. But that is not bringing anything to India or it does, except for IT in service sector? We have not been able to develop a single commercial Fabrication when the World is moving to Graphene, leave silicon one side.

MIT material are useful for good contacts and to work for ToT, when you are in government sector. Academically, its quite similar to our IISc and TATA Fundamental, I will not include IIT's because they are highly commercialized just like any IIM, work of different ideology. The difference arises due to low funding and limited research sectors as a product of that. Other wise they are fully capable of any research.

Any ways, I still hope that funding is increased for R&D in the coming two years.

JNCASR, especially CNR Rao's group is working on graphene, and related 2D material synthesis, and have published several noted papers recently. All is not lost.

The biggest problem is that till the mid 1990s in most places the recruitment in most such universities was absolutely terrible, and these people now occupy senior positions and are mostly worthless. The new Assistant Professor hirings in IISC, IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur have been impressive. In other places, it is still the same old story.

CNR Rao is a big name, and just one would not make any difference. Such type of research should be available at IISc, and other institutes also, in a larger dimension. In europe, every fourth University is capable for those research, in material science. In India there is no funding at all. And being very honest, neither Indians are interested to work in India after completing their Phd or Post Doc. Why, there is no money?

That is correct, if you bring a commercial person and grant him an academic chair, he will be least interested in any research. The projects he will take would be common in every company, in their R&D department.

Not necessarily, only 6 to 7 universities have deep 2D material research. The best is obviously University of Manchester, followed by Penn State in USA. Money is actually less of a problem. The bigger problem in institutional. India needs to open her universities to global students and postdocs for fresh ideas.

But ultimately we need epitaxial 2D layers for devices, and there are only 5 papers in the field.

They are indeed the best. Singapore also has established a lot of research institutes in affiliation to NUS. Well we are not even near to the research going there, like you posted a link.

This single crystal technology was one of the set backs is still remains a set back for Kaveri. The reliability of it is not at par with pure military standards.

Yes, for creep free engines we need single crystal superalloy blades, and only Rolls-Royce and GE have perfected them.
But this is my point, why blame the government only? What are Indian companies doing?
Why can't they match GE or IBM in R&D?
