India has extended the anti-dumping duty (ADD) on various jute products imported from Bangladesh and Nepal. Bangladesh had urged the Indian government not to accept recommendations for extension, while the Indian industry was lobbying to ensure the duty comes into effect. The finance ministry issued a notification issued on Friday to extend ADD for 5 years.

The duty is applicable in the range of $6.3 to $351.72 per MT. The notification said, “The anti-dumping duty imposed under this notification shall be levied for a period of five years (unless revoked, superseded or amended earlier) from the date of publication of this notification in the Official Gazette and shall be payable in Indian currency.”

Indian jute industry was lobbying relentlessly with the government to protect the domestic sector from cheaper imports from the neighbouring countries. India’s Directorate General of Trade Remedies recommended in October this year that the Indian finance ministry should continue the ADD on jute products from Bangladesh and Nepal.

During a recent visit to India, Bangladesh commerce minister Tipu Munshi had requested his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal not to extend the tenure of ADD on the import of jute and jute goods from his country that was imposed on January 5, 2017 and was supposed to end on December 31, 2022.

Now is the time to take these Bhartis to the WTO - and also assign tit-for-tat ADD's, NTB's and Heavy tariffs on Indian imports to Bangladesh.

But given we have an Indian agent as commerce minister and AL in power, none of this is going to happen.

Indians are on the one hand planning to double exports to Bangladesh via CEPA (to the tune of $32 Billion) and one the other hand they are blocking Bangladeshi exports to India at every opportunity.

You give a monkey a banana, and then they take the cue and start dancing on your head.

One more reason to remove AL from power.

Forget India, we should impose a ban on ALL raw jute exports - period.

We are letting India rob us of value addition many times over by handing over cheap raw jute for them to process and re-export in the form of finished products.

The entire planet, in particular Europe, is screaming for low/zero carbon footprint products especially for packaging/storage yet we make no effort to cash in on the opportunity.

The government should privatise all jute mills and increase spending on jute R&D and lobbying developed nations to include jute products in their environmental policy-making.

Not a bad idea. BD people should develop methods to cook jute and eat. Since. @Destranator wants to stop selling to India, we must find out ways to eat the jute-based delicacies.

India has pretty much mastered blackmail and predatory economic policies. Mention this in simple definition of being Banya and people get their dhotis in a twist.

Just to prove these Jamatis that we two can play this game. Doesn’t these Jamatis always being a proponent of banning Indian imports?

Once Bangladesh is removed from LDC list, India should impose ban on cotton export. Let’s see how long their RMG industry can stay competitive.

I know your post is sarcastic but you have inadvertently shed light on a source of nutrition worth exploring further to combat malnutrition in the country:

They do it because they know they have Hasina in their pocket and there will be no repercussion.

This woman needs to go and she WILL BE GONE.

The Hasina regime is intent on importing some Russian US rivalry in the country as form of deflection.

From water to trade, Bangladesh is being weaned to rely on India. Indian colonial intentions for the Bengali nation is quite apparent.

Jute leaves are in use as Shak all through Bengal. I do not see any prospect of its further use.

However, green 2-month old jute can be used to produce pulp for papers. Ooji Pulp and Paper Co., of Japan has the technology.

Now, ask your party’s Darbedh Baba to talk with the Japanese company. But, I doubt anyone in the present Cabinet has the guts to overtake Hasina’s opinions.

If we banned raw jute exports they will ban exports of cotton and food.

It’s the classic cut off your nose to spite your face situation!

And that’s exactly what the BNP would do if it ever got into power again!

And why it scares the shit out of the business community!

Being a keyboard warrior is easy. Running a country requires humility and sense!

You have Hinduvta nutters and we have the BNP nutters.

BNP is actually more dangerous than Jamat! Jamat at least fears the almighty!

Luckily our nutters will never get into power again!

You have debased Indian(hindu) baniya mentality even in your school text books. You start them young in hating your neighbors. I wonder who makes your curriculum.

Indian reach goes beyond its borders.

E.g. Pakistanis, including Bangladeshis who visit Pakistan, are denied Indian business visa.

In the U.K. this severely affects Pakistani IT professionals’ growth.

We are well aware that ModiG could do the same to British Bangladeshis - should BNP/Jamat ever get in.

Of course, this is not a worry for the likes of @Bilal9 and @bluesky - they will never be in a situation to need an Indian business visa 😂😂🤣🤣

Time to do it is NOW. They are already paying higher for our rice. INDIA will reap huge profits from this sale. If you hit their RMG sector by banning Indian cotton they will have no advantage being in LDC list.

All evil hindu baniyas think alike.

We can better utilize our raw cottons in setting up RMG units in BIMARU states. Not that you need skilled labors in running these mills.

Plus we have energy and logistics advantages, and soon a FTA with major economies.
