India eager to join Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline: Iran official

Baluchistan issue is almost solved. The most prominent leader from Baluchistan is taking part in coming elections (May 11) and with him on board it will be just a matter of time. PPP (the party in power) is ideologically at war with TTP, the next govt will find it much easier to engage TTP in dialogue. As TTP is a conglomeration of many small groups, its very likely that most groups can be persuaded to break away from TTP (like any such organization there is roughly 20% hardcore elements and 80% can potentially be brought to some sort of understanding).

USA is unlikely to go for sanctions till it vacates Afghanistan, so in short run IP is not a bad deal. in longer run its a problem but by that time Pk will be out of power crises and IP wont matter that much.

So will ip cure all of Pakistan's current energy shortages?

In short run, I don't like the IP deal but the energy crises is too severe to ignore this option. Plus appreciate the fact that Pakistan won't be spending much on the pipeline.

I am glad that atleast a gas pipeline is bringing India and Pakistan closer to each other. Both nations are some of the most highly population countries. India with the second highest and Pakistan with the 6th highest population.

Supposed to be the 5th largest by 2015 I guess...

India is putting up electricity transmission lines to Pakistan, and some energy lines should be extended from Pakistan's side as well - so as and when required energy can supplied and bought. I like the idea of Gas being bought from Pakistan instead of getting involved in a multinational transmission line. Pakistan buys it from Iran and if needed India buys it from Pakistan - before that the pipelines need to be in place.

India took nuclear deal from US - So, it's over now and regarding Iranian official, elections are couple of weeks away in Iran - So, take a chill pill

Iran helped USA in Afghanistan and Iraq - great Satan theory is for home consumption only. Iran would love if India joins IP deal.

thats what im saying the prerequisite involved here are stability in baluchistan ,cracking a peace deal with ttp ,handling american position vis a vis iran . Everything you said are assumptions nothing concrete .This deal is ideal for the region but is not going to get materialize.

Not when there is an international law ! :azn:

When there is a need to fight with your rival, do you think that someone really give a damn about international law?..

Anyway..it is a pathetic attempt of you to defend yourself...Coming to the topic...Yes...I can clearly forsee that India will ultimately join the IP pipeline...It is not that India does not have alternatives, rather i feel that India should go to every place wherever we get profit and monetary benifit...even at the cost of taking risk of bringing pipeline through Pakistan....And as per my expectation, India and Pakistan will never ever go for any war at least in my generation, apart from few fan boys here who love to fight in out in PDF....

And another factor of IP pipeline is that India would definitely like to be allign with only Islamic power nation Iran, who somewhat perceived as a liberal and soothing attitude towards India...So in a nutshell, India will definitely take it into account Iran and join the IP pipeline...

Finally India finds the cojones. Stand on ur feet dont lay down infront of Uncle SAM

Pakistan will also love it - because pressure of sanctions will be less, prices can be renegotiated which are currently very high, and Pakistan will get transit fees. And it will be great diplomatic victory of India as they got nuclear deal at cost of IPI and will join IP again on other hand our diplomacy and foreign policy sucks.

Here is an article which touches upon the emerging trade potential of Central and South Asia > Strategic dynamics of Gwadar and IP

(The author is downplaying the potential of Pak-Iran differences specifically when it comes to Afghanistan but he is spot on about the trade potential) In this scenario why the heck should we involve India? *Most of the benefits you mention will still be there *if Pk buys from Iran and sells to India on nominal profit.

India should not join in as it's way too costly even for Pakistan needs for power generation when compared with currently available resources in Pakistan,I learnt it will cost 75% more to Pakistan per unit of electricity , with distance cost incurred is bound to increase so it's economicaly foolhardy to join the project.

India has tough choice, work for the interests of its people or work for the capital hill's interests.

not new to us i guess.we're already trading with iran inspite of sanctions

.
Pakistan does not India to Join , we are doing just fine with out any Indian participation

85% gas is for Pakistan and 15 % for China , for short term we will benefit 100% gas to Pakistan

India did not join IPI gas line because in return of not joining this and some other reasons, India was to get the Nuclear Deal. India was to join the NSG. The Quid Pro Quo was favourable to India. It was not simply about stopping in front of American pressure. India has never let go of its interests in front of any American pressure.

And I highly doubt that India would join IP gas pipeline now because while India is in NSG, it is still not in the Wasenaar Group. India wants to join this as well and US is the only one who can make this happen.

Lastly, LoveIcon is right. If India joins this pipeline, it would be most helpful to Pakistan and Iran. If India joins, not only would Pakistan get transit payment, it would make Pakistan immune to sanction as sanctioning India is very very hard.
