India does not want to be caught in US-China game: Inderfurth

Washington, Feb 18 (PTI) Observing that China has been anxiously watching the rise of Indo-US relationship, a former top US diplomat believes New Delhi doesn''t want to be caught in this Sino-US game at the global level.

"China has been watching very carefully the rise of the US-India relationship, including on the defense side," Karl F Inderfurth, the former Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs said.
Participating in a discussion on "Unlocking the full potential of US-India relationship" at Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington-based think-tank, Inderfurth said, "We do more manoeuvres now with the Indian army than they do with any other country".

"Some of them are wondering -- and if you read the Chinese journals, they are wondering if this is part of a containment strategy of -- the Obama strategy of China," Inderfurth said referring to recent reports in this regard in the Chinese media.

"India does not want to be caught up in a US-China -- playing the card, the India card in that relationship. India wants good relations with China because they know that they are neighbours, and they know that they''re both nuclear-weapons states, and they want to trade.:cheers:

They don''t want to get caught up in a machination of US-China. So they''re very concerned about being caught up in that. And so they''re going to maintain their distance," he said.

Inderfurth is currently Wadwani Chair in US-India Policy Studies at CSIS.

"India also has seen the rising, how do we say, assertiveness of China in the last year, 18 months. So they''re quite happy to continue building on the relationship with the United States," he noted.
"But they key to this is not to get into the mindset where it is two against the other, ganging up on the rest.

Somehow our governments have to find a way to deal with each of the relationships on their own merits, and not try to out-strategize or manoeuvre the other," Inderfurth observed.

India wants no involvement in USA-China game as well as talibans and immigrants crossing into our nation.

We are building our defence, but will only be used when attacked first.

.
It may be a little too late. US has been and will use India against China. If India can duke out with China with US sitting silently in the back, then why not.

Thats Pakistan job to duke it out with China and USA at the same time. Not India, leave us out of it.

Ha ha, I like this observation anyway.

In fact, India will benefit from US as well as China in this show down..

.
Really smart move by India.
We should concentrate more on maintaining cordial relationship with both USA & China.

.
it depends how much usa can push india by arm twisting, yankees are best in bargaining in diplomacy..

Like a game of chess every one keeps placing themselves at a position where the feel they would be at an advantage.

Thats what is happening .. thats all.

“Nations have no permanent friends or allies, they only have permanent interests.”

Indians do NOT come with your dove mindset. this business not personal!

this is not just militray but strategic alliance that will help India.. every post here by Indians is one track thinking i.e thinking military only!

This is one journalists opinion . India must and is aligning itself with the US to contain china. China is nefarious as they should be looking out for their interest.

If India is to be successful as true global player in this region ( something china will try their darnest to keep India influence down), then it should work with US , Nato, south east Asians and others in grabbing all the trade deals from those countries have with china.

Look these guys don't like china ( most of the world despises china's allying with the worlds pariah nations), they do business w/ them because they have to. Look at japan- they are now moving to have India be the biggest trade partner from china in the next 5 years. the US wants to do the same. only thing holding back India - it does not have the manufacturing infrastructure that china has. China's manufacturing base is by far superior. India should work on building it's up and is working on it.

the name of the game is both militray and economic alliances.

They can't pursue us to attack China or something, if there's something between US and China then let them sort out within themselves.
So India should sit back and enjoy the show. :coffee:

You have not learnt from the brief 60 years of history. India has always managed to stay nutral in most of the international disputes and will continue to do so. We'll not alligned with either US or China or Russia for that matter. Any relationship that we will have will be of purely professional and business relationship only.

Most glittering example of our non-allignment is that we have always supported the plight of the palestinis and at the same time managed to have good relationship with Israel...

Keep thinking that, all real indians should be glad that you're in the US, far away and unable to influence India at all.

Then you have been blind to to what the politico has been doing in India all these years. Exactly , what I have written. Why are so threatened by India looking out for itself ? you guys do it all the time. hell Pakistan trade deficit w/ china is ridiculous considering you are their friends. they are like 0.25% I read of trade they do with china vs. yours to them. If you treat your friends like that, guess what you will treat your enemies? or at-lest perceived enemies like India. you are killing Pakistan's home grown industries. But that's their business , they have love for you. we have a cautious approach for you.
