India to meet 20 km a day highways target
The government had failed to meet the target and currently it is doing around 12 km a day
Published on 10/27/2010 - 12:35:43 PM New Delhi: Road Transport and Highways Minister Kamal Nath said the government is geared up to meet the target of building 20 km of highways a day.

"We are currently doing around 12 km a day. By next year, we will have work in progress on over 25,000 km of highways. I am hopeful that we will soon be able to achieve 20 km a day target," Nath said at the annual Economic Editors' Conference here.

The government announced in June 2009 that it would build 20 km of national highways a day. However, nearly one and half years down the line, it has not been even able to approach the target, reports IANS.

Nath said the government had failed to meet the target because building highways was a lengthy process and might take over four years.

Works on 4,646 km of national highways was completed between October 2009 and September 2010. It results in an average 12.72 km of highways construction per day against a target of 20 km a day.

Nath said the government plans to award contracts for the construction of 10,665 km highways in fiscal 2010-11. "Work is already in progress on 14,704 km. We target to award another 10,665 km contract this fiscal."

Last year, the government awarded 201 projects having combined length of 9,923 km. Now work is in progress on 14,704 km highways.

Nath said nearly 90 per cent of new contracts are awarded in the build, operate and transfer (BOT) category. "A lot of loopholes are reported in EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts. So we have decided to award majority of the contracts in BOT."

In next 10 years, India will upgrade its 73,000 km of highways into 6,4 and 2 lanes and with international quality. Plan have also been made to built 18,500 KM of greenfield expressways in three phases to be completed by 2021. Work on expressway will start from November 2011.

Unfortunately, thanks to corrupt vote-banking politicians, nothing is going to happen to those slums any time soon. When will this politician-slumdweller circus end?

I've been to Mumbai 5 times (more than half of my relatives live there) and it is a pretty good place. I love the monsoon climate there and the nice greenery near the Mumbai-Pune area. If Mumbai can get rid of the slums then it is going to give the top cities in the world a run for their money.
dude Mumbai or any other Indian cities will remain same even when India become a developed country or HDI is very high because there is no will to do anything like that. Take Mumbai with Shanghai, Istanbul, Tehran etc all of them have some comparable +/- GDP and population but have huge difference in terms of other things.

Chin up folks, Mumbai has changed a lot from the 90's. There used to be many more slums in the 90s but now skyscrapers have replaced them. Give it another few decades and these slums might become invisible.

It is my dream one day to see mumbai look like New York :smitten:. It can only happen once India becomes a developed country . I am a college student , so i hope i can see it in my lifetime.:)

Is this that ridiculous 1 billion dollar house with 600 servants?
It is NOT a one-billion dollar house. That myth has been debunked several times, including, I believe, by the builder itself. Its true value is closer to $180-200 million if I remember correctly. Anyways, its his money so I really don't care either way.
