NEW DELHI: A top US air force official's remarks that his country is planning to station a military aircraft in Thiruvananthapuram as part of its policy of encircling China with defence bases has created flutters here and the government has dismissed any such possibility.

General Herbert 'Hawk' Carlisle, the commander of the US air force assets in the Pacific, had told reporters at a breakfast meeting recently that the American air force was planning to expand its presence in Asia as part of the "pivot to Asia" policy. The idea behind it is to ring China with US and allied forces.

"This is just the start of the air force's plan to expand its presence in Asia. In addition to the Australian deployments, the air force will be sending jets to Changi East airbase in Singapore, Korat airbase in Thailand, Trivandrum in India, and possibly bases at Kubi Point and Puerto Princesa in the Philippines and airfields in Indonesia and Malaysia," he was quoted as saying by Foreign Policy magazine and other media outlets.

General Carlisle said "we are not gonna build any more bases in the Pacific to support the US air force's increased presence there." The US air force has nine major bases in different countries.

This is fucked up if true. How can the govt be so stupid??

Btw i don't think it will happen

perfect, no need to bring americans in india .

perfect, no need to bring americans in india .

What do you mean by that?

We need to be away from usa and nato block,,,thats what i mean.We need to go chinese way of indigenous production and appeasment to none otherwise we will have problems in future with russia and china

Indian communists are actually making objections. Whoever is resisting US military bases in India is a communist/terrorist. We should ignore these parasites in India and go ahead with the planned mission.

USA must be allowed to have military bases in India, otherwise, all those military stuff bought from USA will become meaningless.

What I see is mostly American platforms put up against China - C17, apaches, chinooks, M777, C130 etc - something doesnt add up.

Trivandrum is near to Colombo, where China is setting up a naval base...

Right now we must look for only jv and reject all the off shelf stuff(but emergency stuff like howitzers and heavy lift stuff is exempt as we need these urgently)

Similarly why i am stressing jv with russia is because russia needs investment badly and is willing to part with some technology so we have max to gain there whereas buying western stuff will give no boost to indigenous industry.
We should urgently make investments in mig and kamov to improve these platforms as india is reliant on these for operation from its carriers.

Pray tell how the equipment procured from the US shall be rendered "meaningless" if the American armed forces are not provided with a base on Indian sovereign territory? Is there a clause in the procurement agreement, perhaps added as an addendum, which dictates as such? Are there conditions pertaining to logistics, spares, M-ToT which shall lead to their denial if such concessions are not made? Educate yourself about the subject matter and about the legal framework of such agreements before asserting such fallacious viewpoints. Hyperbole is an ill suited ingredient for a coherent post.

The operative clauses of such agreements are rather clear and impose no such restrictions. Nor can the US alter the clauses until and unless exigent circumstances like an embargo or sanctions arise.

The resultant loss of sovereign initiative, as a repercussion of such an action, itself would be contrary to everything India has struggled for as a nation despite all its numerous setbacks.

What planned mission are you alluding towards, are you suggesting that the GOI has blatantly lied in having issued a statement expressly and explicitly denying the alleged reports and asserting India's continued stance of denying any such privileges to another nation? If not then there is no "mission".

The reason for that is quite simple, the procured systems are the best in class within the strategic and tactical airlift platform segment and within the indirect fire support segment (with the addition of satisfying certain specific operational requirements of the end-user in case of the latter). That is all there is to it.

This is because US doesnt want to see Indian ruin their hardware reputation like they did to Russians
they want to operate their own equipment

If this happens India can kiss their Ruski brothers goodbye!
