India condemns 'dastardly' Pakistan slaying

NEW DELHI - INDIA joined the international community in condemning the assassination on Wednesday of Catholic Pakistani government minister Shahbaz Bhatti, calling it a 'dastardly crime'.

Minorities minister Bhatti was shot at least eight times, police said, in a daylight attack that came two months after the slaying of the governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer.

'We convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the people and the government of Pakistan on the tragic assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti,' the Indian foreign ministry said in a statement.

'We condemn this dastardly crime.' Bhatti, 42, became a second high-profile victim among beleaguered opponents of an Islamic blasphemy law, after Taseer was killed in January.

'In this difficult hour, our prayers and thoughts are with the bereaved family and the people of Pakistan,' the foreign ministry statement added.

India, which has fought three wars with rival Pakistan since the subcontinent's 1947 independence from British colonial rule, has repeatedly urged its estranged neighbour to rein in militant groups on its soil. -- AFP
