India caste council blamed for five suicides

No other country other than India has "major" casteism. The ******* inhuman system that it is. Why the hell isn't it banned yet? when India boasts of so much growth? 'Shining India' eh????

I think Casteism has a lot to do with the highly rampant 'low-selfesteem' 'high ego' issue.

Ban r u kidding me, politicians are elected on caste basis meaning they belong to certain caste, whole same caste vote for him despite he might be corrupt, criminal etc etc

.
Don't know much about other countries that they have caste systems as well but Indian caste system is the worst in the world. It was created for good but we got every possible bad usage of it.

Now also I have seen people of a village don't talk or cooperate with a particular family just because the high caste people told that funeral ceremony of one of the member of that family was not done properly!!!

I have read a lot about Indian caste system. It gave us great pain through out history. Not only low caste but many higher caste people also crashed by this system. Many people of this country mainly Punjab and Bengal converted into other religions just because of caste system. After so many years of independence we still did not get rid of this evil. Now for our leaders its a great political advantage, they make proper uses of it to gain vote, mainly lower caste leaders. But no one really talk much about how to remove it.

Damn. Was expecting you to get all defensive about the caste system, so that I could bash the crap outta ya!

While bashing indian caste system is OK, the 'caste council' in the first article is no different than an elder's council and the people who committed suicide were from the same caste as the council.

so there was no 'casteism' involved. people, like an elder's council, go to these 'panchayats' for justice, this exists mainly in rajasthan and haryana.

caste discrimination and identifying with a caste are two different things. most pakistani muslims also identify with some caste (gujjar, rajput etc) or tribe and many organise on those lines. that automatically does not mean discrimination.

I don't know why all indian members, whenever asked about caste system, take Islam into discussion.

Brothers all religions of this world have sects and hinduism has sects that are worst than any other.... we have some clashes between sects but muslims never say that a person is born dirty, like that happens in hinduism.... still now shoodars are treated like garbage....

Chritianity have sects who have clashes far bitter than Islam... even they have fought wars against each other... So don't take Islam into it...

Caste descrimination is banned since india's independence, there are special laws to protect low castes from caste discrimination and abuse, pretty strict ones. Also there is 50% reservation govt jobs and govt funded educational institutions for low caste people. even calling someone 'shoodra' will send you to jail.

The problem is, even supposedly low caste people also do politics based on caste, organise on caste lines etc. its just a fight for limited resources. these things have collapnsed completely in urban areas though, and are still severe in parts of north india.

In my neighborhood in Lucknow once a Bareillvi Muslim was almost killed by the people in Aliganj mosque because he had allegedly entered in the mosque..my father who is a popular doctor in the locality saved his life...before that only Shia Sunni riots were common in the city....and I never knew that caste system is there in Islam also.Whenever I talk to a Shia about Sunni they abuse them and vice versa...it quite funny to see that happening. As my girlfriend is a Shia Muslim and lives on rent ..one day she asked me to get her a new house...i proposed him a Muslim house unknowingly that it was a Sunni one....she got outraged!

The caste system and its remnants in India are definitely not something to be proud of. It creates divisions amongst people, the polity and is a cause of violence as well as social inequality. However to that end, its not different from other social classes present in other societies in the world. The differences between Mohajirs and Pathans/Punjabis and between Shias/Ahmediyas and Sunnis in Pakistan. And to those Pakistanis including some senior and Elite members pontificating to India on the issue I'd say look at your own house first. As they say in Punjabi - "Apni manji thalle vi sota fer ke vekho!"

There are various sects in Hinduism like Shaivism,Vashniavism,Aryasamaj,Radhakrishna....and even Buddhism is a sect Hinduism nearer to Vashniavism....but there is nothing sort of discrimination......because there is no such thing in a Hindu society...and there are no particular follower rather societies with few thousand people propagating peacefully in WESTern countries....like other ancient religions (in Japan and China) Hinduism is not at all a violent religion........there is no place violence for any sort...that's the beauty of Indian religions...they denounce violence........except Sikhism which is a warrior sect aroused against Muslim dominance in ancient times from Hinduism.

Caste is a totally different thing.....it aroused in the DARK AGES of Hindusim somewhere near the creation of Buddhism.

According to the ancient Hindu scriptures, there are four "varnas". The Bhagavad Gita says varnas are decided based on Guna and Karma. Manusmriti and some other shastras mention four varnas: the Brahmins (teachers, scholars and priests), the Kshatriyas (kings and warriors), the Vaishyas (agriculturists and traders), and Shudras (service providers and artisans).

This theoretical system postulated Varna categories as ideals and explained away the reality of thousands of endogamous Jātis actually prevailing in the country as being the result of historical mixing among the "pure" Varnas - Varna Sankara. All those, including foreigners, tribals and nomads, who did not subscribe to the norms of the Hindu society were contagious and untouchables. Another group excluded from the main society was called Parjanya or Antyaja. This group of former "untouchables" (self described now as Dalits) i.e. downtrodden, was considered either the lower section of Shudras or outside the Varna system altogether. Passages from scriptures such as Manusmriti indicate that the varna system was originally non-hereditary.[13]

Several critics of Hinduism state that the caste system is rooted in the varna system mentioned in the ancient Hindu scriptures.[14] However, many groups, such as ISKCON, consider the modern Indian caste system and the varna system as two distinct concepts.[15][16] Many European scholars from the colonial era regarded the Manusmriti as the "law book" of the Hindus, and thus concluded that the caste system is a part of Hinduism, an assertion that is rejected by many Hindu scholars, who state that it is an anachronistic social practice, not a religious one.[1][2][3][4]

Although many Hindu scriptures contain passages that can be interpreted to sanction the caste system, they also contain indications that the caste system is not an essential part of Hinduism. The Vedas hardly place any importance on the caste system, mentioning caste only once (in the Purush Sukta) out of tens of thousands of verses. Most vedic scholars believe even this to be a subsequent and artificial insertion. In fact, none other than B. R. Ambedkar( a dalit scholar) concluded after a thorough study that this is a much later interpolation and gave strong scholarly evidence to support his conclusion. In the Vedic period, there was no prohibition against the Shudras listening to the Vedas or participating in any religious rite.[17]
