'India can learn from Bangladesh on women's empowerment'

Polio was curbed long before India yet we had to wait for India to be cleared before we could stop our program. Same as prostitution where we closed down most of the brothels, but a vibrant market still operating right across the border. You know the outcome.

Rate of HIV transmission and prevalence (which is mostly through brothels) was <0.1 percent for Bangladeshi adults while in India it was 0.3 percent, three times the amount.

Amount of brothel usage is generally way higher in India than in Bangladesh. So it is a bigger problem for them than in our case.

What ? Why do you need to stop your program ? It should be an ongoing process. Just a few days back I saw some of the agents from government hospital running polio-vaccination camp. I myself served as a volunteer when I was doing my bachelors in Engineering. Your example seems flawed to me.

Getting back to our discussion in hand, you are right about the demand and supply theory. A bigger country has higher demand. However, this logic fails when to explain why that demand is being fulfilled from neighbouring countries.

Can we try to identify the possible reasons for this ? I think that way, we will be able to give proper direction to the discussion.

@nForce

Why even reply bro? Let the phacking thread die...just let the urge to reply...go....

See, when someone tells me we should try to watch and learn from women empowerment schemes of Bangladesh, I accept it with open arms.
When someone tells me, that is because of the supposed religious superiority of a certain sect, I disagree. Funny thing, the person whom I posed my initial question to, is not nowhere to be seen, and some other guys are arguing about some other things which are not exactly related to my initial question.

Since I don't plan to visit India anytime soon - maybe you can gather some data yourself and then enlighten us. :P

I'm pointing at the unusual percentage of Bangladeshi women in Indian brothels. No point in denying the fact that a high degree of human trafficking is involved here.

you are playing the moral police.

Let's try to live in reality and not cloud-cuckoo land. It does not really help.

didn't the nepal earthquake teach you anything about the artificiality of religious beliefs??

stop talking like some teacher in some indian mba college who lives in a delusionary mathematical world that is devoid of human pains, preachings and politics.

.

The same reason we stopped Small Pox program. India needs to continue the program for few more years to make sure no hidden virus still present among populace.

Demand is the main reason for the trafficking. There are still makeshift non institutionalized prostitution in Bangladesh and they collect voluntary girls but buying and selling used to be in the brothels.
I can assure you, there will be very few girls trafficked in 5/10 years time as government is getting serious about it.

Women _are_ more empowered in Bangladesh - because of our culture of openness and acceptance of women as full members of society. Why don't you visit an NGO for training in Dhaka, that way you'll learn a lot. Here's one of our NGO workers (Wasfia Nazreen) who has already scaled the tallest seven summits of the world. Here is an image of her on the peak of Mt. Everest. She is a nominee for one of ten National Geographic's People's Choice Adventurer of the Year.
She also happens to be a person working with rehabilitation of former sex workers.

Aww..now you take offence and thereby you are trying to extrapolate my words to suit your need of playing me down.

I wonder what triggered such reaction ?

"Religion should be abolished in South Asia" its laughable. We will have the largest riots the mankind has ever seen and we will manage to surpass the middle-east in violence.

1. Huge demand.
2. Nexus of human trafficking networks.
3. Very little effort made by the governments of both the countries to control it.
4. Poor income strata among certain sections in Bangladesh. Lack of earning opportunities.
5. Of course, I attribute most of these socio-economic problems of South Asia with our out-of control population, both in India and Bangladesh. We have more mouths than we can feed!

Heavy militarization of the borders is not going to stop it. There will be more border clashes, probably BSF will resort to live-firing, it's a clumsy mess that I don't want to see. But then again, it's necessary upto certain extent.

Proper policing is necessary. As you said, government is getting more and more serious about it.

Economy of both India and Bangladesh is growing and will continue to be so in foreseeable future. That will result in better economic stability.

And last, but not the least, I'm in favour of one-child policy like China!! I hate to see my tax money getting spent on a lot of people without any scope for their upliftment. That's money lost or systematic bribery for votebank!!

I will try to dig deep regarding this.

You again pointing BD as the source of problem. Stop your internal trafficking first which will kill the business itself and eventually stop the trans border trafficking. Its not too much of a problem for BD even though some of the girls get trafficked and draw media attention.

2017 will bring the 100th anniversary of the russian revolution and you not only deride my needed dream for near-future humanity, you also laugh at the progressiveness made through the ages, not least since 1945 among world socialists.

"Religion should be abolished in South Asia" its laughable.

among all of humanity... anything thing else in not acceptable... do go through any of my 4900+ posts.

and what is laughable is people ( esp. in south asia ) finding excuses for keeping religious mysticism ( prayer, ritual, festivals, superstition, blind hope in divine help ) despite nature and human politics making it useless since time immemorial.

We will have the largest riots the mankind has ever seen and we will manage to surpass the middle-east in violence.

1. south asia has been extremely violent for the last 2900 years... it is embedded in culture.

2. the violence in the "middle east" in modern times is externally initiated, to counter the revolutionary activism and progress there.

I have quoted multiple reasons, some have roots in India, some in Bangladesh. If you wish to refute any, you have to tell us why.

The disconnect from reality amuses me, that's what I laugh at. You cannot inject a radical idea into a society. there has to be a general acceptance among the people first. Communism is too good idea, only too good to be true. the World is not ready for something so advanced as Communism, forget South Asia. Had it been a stable system then Soviet Union would have strengthened after Glasnost and Persetroika, not disintegrated.

I'll skip that part. If there is any specific you want to say, please do, right here.

Ohh countless times religion has been used quite effectively for political gains, be it the crusading warlords or the Pakistani landlords. I am pointing out the practicality of it.

Agreed.
2. the violence in the "middle east" in modern times is externally initiated, to counter the revolutionary activism and progress there.

Oh no.. it's not a 'new' thing. They have been always cutting each others throat whenever there was a chance. Earlier, they used to ride horses and camels, nowadays they ride tanks and fighter planes. External factor is irrelevant if internal binding is strong.

The Bengal region was the capital of British India for a long time and during this period there was the Bengal Rennaisance, styled in the form of European REnnaisance, and I think the intellectual thinking advanced women's rights among hindu Bengalis but some of it no doubt rubbed on the Bengali Muslims as well. Women's emancipation in India was began during the Rennaisance in Bengal. So you can say the better treatment of women in many ways owed to British rule than anything else.

let's not equate women assuming traditional roles of men to women getting better treatment.

These are not wishes, it's reality. I have already quoted sources for the same. It's different thing if you wish to turn your back at the reality.
While I'm not against prostitution in general, I am raising a genuine concern regarding why women belonging to a particular nationality are getting more and more involved in this profession in a foreign country. Chances of exploitation are very high.
It's not about belittling someone, let me assure you. We have a genuine problem at our hand. If you have any constructive point to make, please do. If not, you can choose to ignore me, your choice.

If you have any logical argument please bring them forward. I will be forced to report you if you resort to meaningless name calling.

One gets tired of hearing that 20 million illegal BD folks in India or as you claimed Indian brothels full of BD women, when there is no reliable official data to support it. Anyone who spouts these claims without any reliable data to support each claim is stupid.

Since you fit the definition, therefore, with all due respect, you are stvpid !!!!
