Star Online Report
In an attempt to boost mutual cooperation in the energy sector, India is planning to build an oil and gas pipeline with Bangladesh, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister of India Dharmendra Pradhan said yesterday.
Pradhan said he had a very fruitful discussion on energy cooperation with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his recent visit to the country, according to The Statesman.

"The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has started the process for a pipeline from Contai in West Bengal via Haldia to Duttapulia on the India-Bangladesh border for supplying oil and natural gas," the news portal quoted the minister as saying.

"We have discussed with our Bangladesh friends and have agreed to take the pipeline to Bangladesh. There are also talks to bring the pipeline back to India through Siliguri," he said.

"A lot of energy cooperation is building up with Bangladesh. We have started supplying diesel now, there are plans to supply natural gas as well," he said.

The minister also said there are plans to set up a pipeline from Numaligarh refinery in Assam which has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh, reports The Statesman.

"The Bangladesh prime minister is slated to visit India later, but before that my Bangladeshi counterpart (Nasrul Hamid) is coming. Together we will create the ground for more energy cooperation so that the Prime Ministers of both India and Bangladesh can ink more deals," said Pradhan.

He also said India was augmenting its natural gas terminal capacity.

"We have booked substantial gas in several parts of the world including America, Australia, Mozambique. We have long term contract with Qatar and are also discussing with Iran. So we have plenty of gas bookings and India as a whole is augmenting its LNG terminal capacity," added Pradhan.

India-Bangladesh gas pipeline on the cards

The news title says something that the news does not say. What kind of BD-India gas pipeline the headline is talking about? Is it that the gas from Qatar will be unloaded in some Indian LNG tank yard from where India will supply gas to BD? Why BD should accept such an idiotic Indian proposal when it should itself enhance its own capacity to convert LNG to the gaseous form.

Either land and capital access is cheap in BD (so absolutely everything becomes BD's oyster) or it isnt (and thus must be hedged with region because of land and capital premiums/priorities). It's same argument in asking shouldn't BD produce all of its own electricity instead of importing some amount given the ramp curves of long term capacity building and current/short term demand.

Make up your mind on this before simply doing the blah blah routine again.

indians feeling awfully lonely; even hindu dominated Nepal is about to dump india. So indians want to to hug some pipe dream to export some imported gas. That is just pity for supa powa india.

Tell your fellow slaves to stop buying so much Indian stuff on the ground, your tears and butthurt matter zero here to your grand cause and cherrypick dream, do something more useful with actual people, just look at them shamelessly smiling as we shoot you lot dead at the border each day:

More salivating slaves, lol @ these BDs backbone in reality:

Take your recipe to a sea-starved Nepal and Bhutan. Bd has many hundred kms. of sea shore. Only issue here is the bigot leaders of the Awami League. These low born guys are only half educated. They probably do not know the BoB is in our south. These bigots make things difficult for us, but the Indian govt is there also to take all the advantages out of their ignorance.

One simple question. Why it is necessary for BD to import via India LNG yard set up somewhere in Orissa? It is not the same as buying electricity. We are starved of that substance and it takes time to build the necessary power plants. But, LNG is soooo different!! BD should not depend upon India on its primary source of energy.

Why does not India propose to sell gas to BD that it has discovered in the Orissa coast of BoB?

All this cooperative articles are coming I think because of visit of Sheikh Hasina ,they have no ground realities, she might be visiting last time as Bangladeshi Prime minister that's why all the feel good news, nothing about Rohingya nor Illegal bengalis or even India abstaining from Bangladesh sponsored UN resolutions

Guys, did you care to take a look at the Date of the article? It's from last year before PM's visit to India. And Yes...There is a long-term vision/plan to turn this entire continent into a single open energy market (gas, oil, electricity), where anyone could trade.

It comes down to where is the scarce capex BD gets (both internally and externally) best utilized according to the ROI and opportunity cost of the land too.

Remember that spending X Taka on a domestic LNG terminal/expansion etc takes away X taka from setting up say a manufacturing SEZ....and the ROI (esp long term) is quite different.

This is just one snapshot of what a govt will have to do in its analysis. You cannot just use emotion on such stuff and say "why cant everything be done domestically". When you have huge amount of land and capital at disposal, this prioritsation is also mitigated to the extent you desire....but BD is not in that position and will not be for a very long time.

You do not have full picture of such analysis, neither do I for that matter, but it will be along those lines. BD govt for example will have its own data on how ROI ramp curves of such projects materialise in BD....such information is never disclosed publicly because often its owned by (previous project) private companies in first place and publishing what it shows removes what little bargaining power BD govt has on new and future plans.

Why does not India propose to sell gas to BD that it has discovered in the Orissa coast of BoB?

Because Indian market is much more robust and we have developed and are developing good capacity now for logistics side of it. Simple realised energy related capex of India vs BD should tell you more than enough on why its likely expedient for BD to piggy back on Indian logistics for energy (this includes anything and everything).
