India asks Canada to curb Sikh separatists

They already have.. its called punjab. its in both India and Pakistan.

Pakistani punjab has got nothing to do with this issue. And Punjab is not just about sikhs. Sikh are mostly punjabis in India but in Pakistan they are mostly Pakhtoon and live in N.W.F.P from centuries.

Sikhism is a religion while Punjab is a land and a diverse culture with a rich heritage.

No doubt khalistani movement is trying to revive with full strength.Although its not new to hear this in Canada...infact the khalistani agents operate mainly from these places (outside Punjab, mostly western countries). But seeing the situation and current scenario in Punjab, its very highly unlikely that khalistn movemnet will revive again,at least in India.

Khalistan.......is now a Khali Sthan (Blank Space). ROFL

well...not exactly...if it was to make fun of the name then it was ok but if you are giving a pictur of the current status of the group..then...........I dont really think so.
Personally I dont think it is not as effective as it was earlier and it is actually good for both Punjab and India..but saying its completely washed off will be a joke mate !

Well its the difference of perception: People living outside India re still obsessed with it....especially in Canada....or Kanedda...in Punjabi lingo...
I have personally interacted with people like these....but they go mum...when asked ... whether they will come back to start a fight ...the response is.....we are living in Kanedda...and we will support the movement form there....why come here ...

Most Sikhs of Pakistan are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (NWFP). There's very few Sikhs in Punjab Province of Pakistan. There's more Christians in Punjab province of Pakistan than there are Sikhs, and of course Muslims are a majority in all provinces of Pakistan.

I know that Indian state of Punjab has majority Sikh population, also in historical Punjab regions in India like Haryana and Himachal Pradesh there is a significant Sikh population.

Khalistan supporters want Indian state of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and also parts of Jammu as part of their proposed Sikh homeland.

Aren't some Sikhs annoyed by the fact that so many immigrants from other parts of India are moving to their land up north even may make Sikhs a minority in their homeland of Punjab (including Haryana and Himachal Pradesh).

You are then not updated on this issue..I was talking about Punjab as well...it still continues to be present there, though very few of them and mostly funded by the people you were talking about (from Kanedda).

Khalistan had a chance when the movement was at it's peak. Right now India is stronger than ever and thanks to our kind neighbors, united.

As India develops even further and generations progress, whatever separatists remain shall also fade away.

Those in Canada can perhaps contribute money to buy a private Island and name it Khalistan ;)

No !

First of all the Sikhs are the land owners there and they never leave their land. They might even go to Canada or other western countries (as the trend has been) they never ever leave their land..so no question of the Sikh themselves being a minority in Punjab.
Secondly the people from places that you just refferred come as they are offered to work in the fields mostly owned by the sikhs themselves.

BTW Punjab is in India and India is owned by all the Indians just the way sikhs are present in other parts of India as well just like any other community being present in any other part of India..there is nothing to be worried about..thats the way it goes on in a democratic country.

India is great! A Sikh prime minister is asking a foreign country to curb anti-INDIA khali-stan terrorists.

Sikhs were always believed highly in Indian nationalism. In terms of ratio they are more in the armed forces than any other ethnic groups. These terrorists sit in Canada and talk about Sikhs! They are very small group and don't bother about Sikhs anymore. Sikhs are always Indian first.

Immigrants are moving to UAE, Canada, and various other parts.. there is nothing of Punjab specific.

WASHINGTON: Two months before the 25th anniversary of the bombing of Air-India flight Kanishka, India has asked Canada to monitor surging activities of Sikh separatists in that country when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.

In his 30-minute meeting with Harper on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit at Walter E Washington Convention Centre on Monday evening, Manmohan Singh conveyed his concerns over the surge in activities of Sikh separatists in Canada who are trying to revive militancy in Punjab.

Manmohan Singh conveyed India's continuing concerns over the activities of terrorist organisations in that country, Vishnu Prakash, the spokesperson of India's external affairs ministry, told journalists here after the talks.

Manmohan Singh hoped that the Canadian government will curb and monitor the activities of these organizations, said Prakash.

India has been watching warily a marked resurgence of pro-Khalistan elements in Canada recently and has alerted the Canadian authorities about it many a time.

Last month, India's Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken told the Indian parliament that Sikh militant groups, especially those based abroad, continue to persist with their efforts to revive militancy in Punjab. He added that the government is maintaining a close watch on such outfits.

Outfits like the Babbar Khalsa International, International Sikh Youth Federation, Khalistan Commando Force and Khalistan Zindabad Force continue to be banned under India's Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2004.

Recently, the Indian high commission in Ottawa raised the issue of rising activities of Sikh separatist Khalistan movement in Canada with the Candian government. Canada is one of the few countries, according to the Indian government, where pro-Khalistani elements are becoming active once again.

India also is concerned at attempts by some elements to de-list the banned organizations such as the Babbar Khalsa in Canada.

Besides airing concerns over the activities of anti-India terrorist organisations, Manmohan Singh also discussed with Harper the forthcoming G20 summit Canada will host in June this year.

Harper sought Manmohan Singh's views on the G20 summit and the need for promoting balanced and sustainable growth, said Prakash.

The two leaders also expressed satisfaction at the finalization of a nuclear deal in November last year and hoped it will be signed when Manmohan Singh goes to Canada for the G20 summit.
