Canberra, April 27 (ANI): Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith has said that it is impossible to contain India and China.

The Herald Sun quoted him as saying that military collaboration between Australiaand United States was not a response to the Asian countries about their rising influence, Herald Sun reports.

Touring nuclear-powered submarine USS Michigan at Western Australia's HMAS Stirling naval base, Smith denied that China was a military threat to the region.

Smith denied reports that America's rising military presence in Australia was a direct response to China's armed expansion.

"We are going through a period where strategic influence is moving to our part of the world - strategic influence, political influence, economic influence, Smith said. It's not just the rise of China, it's the rise of India, the rise of the ASEAN economies combined, and the ongoing strength of the Japanese economy, he added.

He said a strong American presence in the Asia-Pacific region is needed to ensure peace and prosperity.

Smith estimates that the America's bilateral relationship with China, as well as China's relationship with India, would dominate world politics over the next 50 years.

The Australian defence ministersaid increasing cooperation with US armed forces, includingUS Marines rotating through Darwin and more visits by US warships to Australian naval bases, was 'very a much a joint exercise' and not prompted by either side.

Smith also said that US aircraftswould also be given greater access to Australian airfields and bases in the Northern Territory, including RAAF Tindal and RAAF Darwin. (ANI)

I don't get it why this guy is clubbing both of us together in the same scenario despite us having the most transparent (and counter-productive to the nation) government.

Guess the Japanese invasion has kept modern Australia's concerns about anything in Asia Pacific alive. It is understandable.

Even if it is hypothetically assumed of an Indian invasion of Oceania, we would have to plough through 2 dozen countries to establish any means of supply chain during an enduring conflict.

Our war machine isn't an expeditionary force to conduct wars far away from Indian borders.

Don't be so modest. India is a superpower with fearsome power projection capabilities all the way to the South China Sea. India is an existential threat to Australia.

Well potential threat and existential threat differentiation is determined by the projected foreign policy of a country. Yours least to say, hasn't been very pleasant recently.

We have a large territory to defend and therefore don't have the capacity to strike anywhere outside the Indian subcontinent militarily.

How can a developed authoritarian regime country China with imperialist ambitions can be compared with poor third world peaceful nation like India?

Australians are not getting their basic's right.

China cannot be contained, we have far too many nukes.

india will probably fall apart on its own (with economic downgrade, collapsing rupee, unstoppable Maoist insurgency). If not, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Burma and Bhutan will contain it without needing Australia's help.

Australians are not getting their basic's right.

Hegemonic indians are extending their claws into the SCS, crazily expanding their missile and weaponry development at the stark
expense of the dire suffering poor, still struggling with their deep rooted social and religious problems, brutally crushing their uprising rebels through draconian laws and military crackdowns. It had wars with its neighbours and the territorial disputes are not abated. It is politically and economically unstable.

Do you think you can still fool around with your "biggest democracy", "peaceful and humanity" slogans beyond your borders?

Don't be so modest. India is a superpower with fearsome power projection capabilities all the way to the South China Sea. India is an existential threat to Australia.

It is not modesty it is a cheat!

Why don't people actually read the article and take what he says for face value instead of making assumptions and twisting his words around?

The defence minister isn't saying China/India are a threat, infact the whole article is about him saying that the U.S military basing in Australia has nothing to do with trying to contain China or India or any other country that people continually claim is the objective.

India isn't being compared with China, once again you are a person who hasn't read the article correctly and you are making assumptions.

The defence minister is trying to put the point across that the basing of U.S assets in Australia isn't to contain any nation whether it be China, India or any other country in the region. China and India were used in the same sentence, but he in know way said or implied comparison.

nobody is thinking about to conatin india (except China maybe)...but China is accusing few countries for trying to contain "China"...Mental pressure for persuing the status SUPERPOWER is taking its toll (being Paranoid  ) i say...

You and I both know that India is an existential threat to Australia while China is a market for Australian goods. India competes with Australia in selling raw materials.

Any chinese antics will result in china itself getting contained by vietnam, korea, japan, usa, taiwan and india, australia, philipines.Chinese attempts at using nukes for bullying tactics will only result in skorea and japan becoming nucleur nations.
So decide whether u want to be a hegemonistic nation treating everyone as vassals,or a first among equals non belligerent asian example.
