KOLKATA: India is expected to become the world's second largest producer of crude steel in 2015-16, moving up from the fourth position, as its capacity is projected to increase from 100 million tonne (MT) to about 112.5 MT in 2015-16. "All indicators suggest that India will soon move up to the second position both in production and consumption," a sectoral analysis by Frost & Sullivan's Metals & Mining Practice said.

With infrastructure development and automotive industry driving steel demand, production is expected to hit 140 MT by the end of 2016, while consumption is expected to grow 6.8% to reach 104MT by 2017.

According to the analysis, the Indian steel industry is forging ahead despite "chronic handicaps like poor infrastructure". It said, "The government is working proactively to provide incentives for economic growth by injecting funds in construction, infrastructure, automotive and power, which will drive the steel industry in the future."

Local cos change tack

With nearly all major domestic steel producers in the process of adding a mix of brownfield and greenfield capacity, the total planned capacity hike in crude steel production till 2017 is estimated at well over 100 MT.

While total installed capacity for crude steel in 2013 was 102 MT, capacity utilisation was about 80%.

State-run Steel Authority of India (SAIL) is adding 27 MT, comprising 21.4 MT of brownfield and 5.6 MT of greenfield capacity. Tata Steel, too, is poised to add substantial greenfield capacity. While JSW Steel is adding 12 MT of brownfield capacity, JSW Ispat and Essar Steel will add another 4.5 MT and 10 MTof brownfield capacity, the report said, citing data from ministry of steel and Frost & Sullivan.

State-run Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), which runs the Vizag Steel Plant, is slated to add 7 MT of new capacity, while mining major NMDC's new steel plant at Nagarnar in Chhattisgarh will add another 3MT of new steelmaking capacity.

Monnet Ispat, Visa Steel and Electrosteel are also set to add 3.5 MT, 3.75 MT and 2.5 MT of additional greenfield steel capacity. Frost & Sullivan, however, added in its analysis that domestic producers will face challenges in securing iron ore and coal, two major inputs for steel and issues related to mining. "Delays in land and environmental clearances, threat of increasing imports from China and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries may also restraint growth prospects," the report added.

India overtakes US as 3rd biggest steel producer

NEW DELHI: India has overtaken the US to become the third-largest steel producer in the world with a production of 14.56 million tonnes (MT) in first two months of the year.

India has been the fourth-largest steel producer for the past five years, behind China, Japan and the US.

Data compiled by World Steel Association (WSA) showed that the country's production growth was the highest during the January-February period at 7.6 per cent as compared to the global average of just 0.6 per cent at 127.6 MT.

Production in China, which accounts for nearly half of the global steel production, fell during the period by 1.5 per cent. It produced 65 MT steel during the period.

Japan, the second-largest producer, reported a total output of 17.4 MT, but production in the country fell 2.2 per cent.

The US, which was the third-largest steel producer since 2010, produced 13.52 MT during the January-February period, giving away its position to India.

On a yearly basis, India may retain the position given the fact that a lot of capacities are set to be commissioned during the year from its present installed manufacturing capacity of a little over 100 MT.

Production in the US, on the other hand, is heading for a stagnation with no signs of growth in the immediate future.

Output in the US has been hovering between 86 MT and 88 MT for the last four years.

The gap of production between the two countries was just 5 MT last year.

Interestingly, the US snatched the third slot from India in 2009.

Looks like Japan will be tackled in a few years too also we should take some steps against Cheaper imports from China,SK & CIS

If projection goes as per actual data, it will be reality soon

Good for our infrastructure development and Navy 80% Cap utilization is impressive considering the shortage of Coal

Any news abt posco plant ?

China is cutting the steel production now, since 1ton steel will use 1.3 tons coal, China did this to solve Environmental pollution, since steel production(820MT) take about 1/4 of China's Energy consumption(=1.06billion tons coal‘s energy),I think 200~300MT productions for China is better, welcome India product more steel, well done!Congratulations, and this meets China's interest too.

China doesn't need to make that much more steel anyways I guess. CHina already has a huge high speed train network, infrastructure is already in place through out major cities and new cities as well. For maintaining the infrastructure the need isn't that huge but India needs so much more steel. I fear the pollution level in India will sky rocket although we have no other choice as coal is cheap and alternative energy is too expensive for poor country like India.

Agree with you, China and India have many coal and less oil, China spent 3.7 billion tons coal in 2014, steel production accord for 27% of them, China needn't such large number --half of the world's steel production, other countries to product more steel meet China's interest, even to import steel is better for China, India needs steel now since India will start a lot of Infrastructure Construction, this is good for both China and India
