India aid to Bhutan, ties with Russia worrying China

On August 8, 1949 Bhutan and India signed the Treaty of Friendship, calling for peace between the two nations and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.[2] However, Bhutan agreed to let India "guide" its foreign policy and both nations would consult each other closely on foreign and defence affairs. The treaty also established free trade and extradition protocols.[2]

The occupation of Tibet by Communist China brought both nations even closer.[2][3] In 1958, the then-Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited Bhutan and reiterated India's support for Bhutan's independence and later declared in the Indian Parliament that any aggression against Bhutan would be seen as aggression against India.[2] The period saw a major increase in India's economic, military and development aid to Bhutan, which had also embarked on a programme of modernisation to bolster its security. While India repeatedly reiterated its military support to Bhutan, the latter expressed concerns about India's ability to protect Bhutan against China while fighting a two-front war involving Pakistan.[2] Despite good relations, India and Bhutan did not complete a detailed demarcation of their borders until the period between 1973 and 1984.[2] Border demarcation talks with India generally resolved disagreements except for several small sectors, including the middle zone between Sarpang and Geylegphug and the eastern frontier with the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh :victory:

India posses very strong relationships with Russia. The time span which you are specifying is cold war period.During that period India had a policy of Non-Aligned movement. It was Pakistan who is a long time ally of USA.
So obviously we had to keep buying weapons from USSR.
I think you get your answer.

yea and during that period Russia is also one of the best weapons makers in the world(given right support of the platforms and training of crews as with everyone else) and again china was embargoed by both superpowers(between sino-soviet split in the 60's and china-west honeymoon of the 80's) and had weak domestic capabilities(for the most part). india and china had similar comparable GDP's at the time.

if anything these days China is 5 times richer than India(even more so if we look at this from government income's point of view china's government tax revenue stands at about 1 trillion USD), has very strong domestic industries in everything, Russian equipment is now available to the PRC all meaning the imaginary gap you guys are talking about should have existed long ago and in fact be quite large in the mid 20th century. but the fact is there was no real gap, in fact it was china that had the ICBM's and nuclear subs, and today yes US is far ahead but dont see how things are so much worst for china this time around, given several factors are now strongly in its favor vis-a-vis india that werent there before.
