Increase pilot-cockpit ratio: Air chief

BANGALORE: The Indian Air Force needs to improve the pilot to cockpit ratio and is working overtime to train new pilots. Chief of air staff Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne said this while inaugurating the Positron Emission Tomography centre at Command Hospital Air Force (CHAF) on Friday.

"The IAF had been working overtime to train new pilots and the air crew was available 24/7 for this purpose. We want these young pilots to get ready soon. Here aerospace medicine plays an important role when crucial testing of pilots ready for hostile combat circumstances happens,'' he said.

The air force is trying to minimize bureaucratic delays and rehabilitation of its personnel who are disabled during operations is being given special emphasis, he said.

Speaking on the need to keep pace with new technology, he said India has begun induction of cutting-edge technology to transform and add to its fire power.

IAF men should brace for a change to the digital world as the age of analog is over. "Instead of operating in a stand-alone mode, they have to be part of a larger team, know basics of developing human relations and find out a new way to overcome leadership challenges," he advised the young brigade.

The Uttarakhand episode was a case study of the resilient nature and sustainability of our pilots and it reaffirms the need of intense training, the air chief said. He said the new platforms of IAF would include the C-17 from the US and also the programme involving C17 and C-139T long haul transport aircraft displayed the intention for new platforms.
