Beijing: In a rare disclosure, China's ruling Communist Party has claimed that some of its officials were funding the Dalai Lama by donating money to him, undermining the fight against "separatist" forces.

A senior discipline inspection official has "lambasted some party officials for allegedly donating money to the 14th Dalai Lama, saying such behaviour severely undermines the party's fight against separatism," state-run Global Times reported on Tuesday.

Some party officials have neglected important political issues and the country's anti-separatist struggle, Wang Yongjun, head of the discipline watchdog in Tibet, which is officially called the Tibet Autonomous Region, was quoted as saying.

The Global Times, a tabloid publication attached the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), also quoted a 2016 report issued by Tibet's discipline watchdog linking "15 party officials to alleged illegal overseas separatist organisations in 2014 who provided intelligence to the Dalai Lama clique and funded secessionist activities."

It, however, did not reveal the names or the designations of the officials.

This is the first time official media here has come out with a disclosure of Chinese officials' links with the Dalai Lama after he fled from China to India in 1959.

Wang, in an article published yesterday in a magazine run by the CPC, the Central Commission of Discipline Inspection and the Ministry of Supervision, wrote that "some have even donated to the 14th Dalai Lama clique, joined illegal underground organisations and provided intelligence to overseas organisations."

A few party officials are failing to "uphold their political integrity" and are "completely ignoring political discipline," Wang said, adding that such behaviour has affected the CPC coherence and its ability to fight separatism.

China considers the 14th Dalai Lama as a political exile who has attempted to split Tibet from China under the guise of religion.

China has been carrying out a systematic crackdown in Tibet and associated prefectures with Tibetan population to eliminate the influence of the Dalai Lama, who is revered and regarded as a spiritual leader heading Tibetan Buddhism.

In recent years, over 120 Tibetans, mostly monks, have committed self-immolations in different parts, calling for the return of the 81-year-old leader.

His recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh which China calls 'South Tibet' soured the relations between India and China further as Beijing lodged a diplomatic protest and announced Chinese "standardised" named for six places in Arunachal Pradesh in retaliation.

The Himachal Police on Saturday seized nearly Rs 40 lakh worth foreign and Indian currency from four Tibetan monks travelling in a Fortuner from Delhi to McLeodganj. Police said their vehicle was intercepted at Mehatpur in Una district, bordering Punjab, during a routine check at a naka in the afternoon. The vehicle has a Delhi registration number and police said the four men began their journey from Majnu Ka Tilla in New Delhi.

An official said most of the currency was in Indian rupee (26 lakh), while Chinese yuan and US dollars made up the rest. Himachal DGP Sanjay Kumar confirmed the seizure but said the matter had been referred to the Indian Tax department as the monks claimed it to be donations. “No case has been registered so far as I-T officials who have reached the spot are counting the cash and verifying its source,” he said. He, however, said since a similar seizure had occurred at Mehatpur in 2011, police are collecting details and recording the statements of the four men.

Unlikely.

What will HH do with all this 'intelligence'?

He is a spiritual guru who has no intentions of violence.

What a stupid made up report! The reporter should be fired and the channel should be closed for such gross made-up stories.

BTW you cannot even scat in China without the government knowing.

All these members you see here repeating same patterns of responses from China are ordered to speak thus. Any deviation from what the CCP says and they'll be "replaced", if you get what I mean.

So saying that they admitted to funding is really stupid.

Chinese think they can outsmart India with their politics. To start with ,their political structure is a rigid one party system. The moment they claim that some of their officials are doing things against their party rule for the sake of degrading a monk they are actually weakening their party structure and central power.

More or less , all this is linked to the border dispute talks.

It is linked to Chinese hallucinations and their thinking that they can expand their influence.

In the South Asia they have India and Tibetan aspirations to tackle.

There has been a power struggle going on in CPC between Xi Jinping and Jiang Zemin. And Jiang Zemin doesn't let go of any opportunity to paint Xi in bad light. Remember when Xi Jinping was in India and Chinese troops did a border incursion. That was him. Also the news about Chinese nuclear missiles being deployed at the Russian border when Xi was talking about cooperation. That was him. And the Global Times is controlled by him. So you'll see that these party workers will (very conveniently) turn out to be loyal to Xi Jinping.

Indian Establishment and Indian Military Planners are well aware about what the Chinese are trying to do.

China today dismissed reports that its foreign minister put off his visit to New Delhi last month to attend a RIC meeting to protest India's decision to allow the Dalai Lama to travel to Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims as part of Southern Tibet.

The meeting of foreign ministers of Russia India and China (RIC) to be held in New Delhi in April was put off as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi declined to attend it.

"About the meeting that was to be held last month, as far as I know the reason is not China," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a media briefing here when asked about Beijing’s reported refusal to the attend the trilateral meeting.

He said China pays attention to the trilateral cooperation mechanism under which the three foreign ministers meet annually to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues. "We have actively participated in the meeting of foreign ministers and also other activities under the framework," Geng said.

"According to my information, the three countries are now talking about the schedule of the next foreign ministers meeting. They are maintaining communication and consultation," he said.

Chinese officials said Wang could not confirm his participation in the meeting due to scheduling problems. China last month lodged a diplomatic protest with India over the Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh, which it claims as part of Southern Tibet. The Chinese official media carried a torrent of articles criticising India for permitting the Tibetan spiritual leader to the area. China has also released "standardised" Chinese names for six places in Arunachal Pradesh to butters its claims.

Geng today said China objects to foreign leaders meeting with the Dalai Lama when asked about reports that Beijing has asked US President Donald Trump to not meet the Tibetan spiritual leader like his predecessors.

The Dalai Lama's meetings with Trump's predecessor Barack Obama and former US presidents have drawn protests from China.

Asked whether China has made the specific request to Trump, Geng said that Beijing is firmly opposed to any foreign leaders meeting the Dalai Lama.

"The 14th Dalai Lama is not a simple religious figure, but has long engaged in anti-China separatist activities. He is a political exile. We firmly oppose any foreign countries allow him to visit them or any foreign official having any official exchange with him," he said.
