In China, an App About Xi Is Impossible to Ignore — Even if You Try

Chinese submitted to Mao's Red Book at one point. Looks like you now are equally vulnerable to an updated version.

Gambit, you should really refrain from making comments about Chinese politics. It made your "Professional" title like a phD cap bought in Dollar Tree. :enjoy:

The APP is a required download for CPC members in China. It is a Privilege to be a CPC member in China, and we all know Great Privilege comes with Great Responsibility. Regular folks are not required to install.

You can call it a tool of propaganda, but you can also call it a tool of governance streamlining. After all, won't Donald Trump wish every employee in Federal Government on the same page?

The core content of the APP is countless video courses on different scientific topics. It makes you feel you are back to the colleague campus again. That's why the APP get its name: Xue Xi Qiang Guo, or Study Leads to a Strong Nation / Study makes China strong.

Here are the pictures of the some courses available from the APP. The English translation (in blue) is added by me.

So basically, the Chinese government purchases the IP right of all the video courses, and make the APP a FREE resource for people who want to learn/study.

But of course, the New York Times article will not tell you what are exactly available from the APP.

Is it true that Xi's thought enshrined in the Chinese Constitution? If it is true that Xi is in the Chinese constitution, it is pretty much pointless in saying that this app is supposed for Party members only. Why is there is there a 'social credit' system for all Chinese? Should that be restricted only to Party members? After all, like you said about privilege, right?

As for me commenting on Chinese politics, in that vein, why do Americans on this forum not see you give reciprocal admonishment to your fellow Chinese about commenting on American politics?

.
Am not mocking anyone's veneration of his country's past, if that is what you thought. I just think it is hilarious that you guys would criticize me for bringing up Mao when you guys have been doing it all the time. All countries have in their past eras that are distasteful in today's perspective.

As for this app, there is no conspiracy here. Somewhere someone in China found it. You guys talk as if China is like NKR where everything is closed off. People found it and they are reporting it. Its usage maybe low at this time, but its existence seems to be perfectly inline with China's history. Mao have his Red Book and in his time, whoever does not have a copy in immediate possession was liable to reap negative consequences. That paper 'app' of China's history you cannot deny.

But it is telling the vehemence of you guys' denial. It means you know that the idea of such a cult figure is possible in China and that you are embarrassed about it. It is Mao all over again.

I have explained in this thread, and GZ Zhou also provied more details about it.
maybe you already get more information about what this app looks like. it more like TED, full with scientific topics.
social credit is another system, doesn't related to this app at all. please dont involved in this thread.
social credit is for all Chinese. but mainly for finance purpose. we have a name "老赖", those person are very rich, but refuse to pay salaries to workers. social credit system will ban them to buy High speed trains tickets, book hotels, etc.

Why we need to be embarrassed by Mao? All US presidents before Lincoln were slave owners and many of them were directly involved in killing hundreds of millions of native Americans and black slaves, it's Americans should be ashamed talking about their past leaders, not anyone else.

That is hilarious considering how much Mao and his methods are venerated by you guys in this forum.
What's wrong with veerateing one's countries past leaders? You Americans changed a mountain into your past slave owner leaders's portraits.

.
Honest? Sure.

How about not being promoted at work? Not qualifying for better loan rates? More difficult to travel? A lower 'social credit' rating would be compelling enough, right?
I don't think all the things you said will happen because this is unproductive and inefficiency, you have no way to check all your employees and waste of company's resources. You just make up all those things yourself that not even in the reports.

What is good for past American leaders, then it is equally good for past Chinese leaders, right? So why do you criticize me for bringing up Mao back in post 39? No one is saying you are embarrassed by Mao. Am saying you guys are embarrassed that once again, your country is falling for the same method of citizenry control. Xi and the Party believes it worked once, it will work again.

Regardless of what this 'social credit' system is for, the fact that China believes it is necessary is a sign of authoritarian control and that there is really no widespread resistance among the people. No resistance is a good thing for the Chinese leadership. It means a compliant citizenry at least to this one aspect of citizenry control. That compliant mentality is reflected in this forum. So today, this app is for Party members, tomorrow, it might just be compulsory for all. If this app is compulsory for all, would YOU approve?

CPC is enshrined in Chinese constitution, so it is pointless to argue if its leaders' name should be in the text. Besides, Chinese Constitution gets revised every now and then, and it is not carved in stone that they have to come up with bunch of amendments to make sense out of hundreds year old text.

Chinese "social credit" system is not much different from your "Credit Score", plus your "Police Records". Let's call it "Credit Score 2.0". I have no idea why people in the West make a big fuss about it, you get checked on all those records anywhere that matters anyway. You are mixing up two distinctively different concepts, CPC membership and citizenship.

Americans are indoctrinated to believe their political system is THE gold standard by which every other system should be judged. Most of them do not have the ability to excise "critical thinking" as why so. A few smart ones are casting doubts on what we take as the "truth", like Prof. Daniel Bell who wrote "China Model". There must be some dynamics in China that can't be explained by existing Western theory, and some logic that people in the West can't comprehend. They must be doing something right in China, so right that the most powerful country in the West is feeling so "threatened".

A few newbies aside, most Chinese members on PDF know American politics better than you do on China's, because most of them have first hand living experience in both countries and know both languages, therefore, they are more likely closer to truth than those who don't.

I never rely on western media alone. Also, western media is useful when one knows what to trust and not trust. I have this information directly from two of my friends, both of whom have got Chinese spouses who work in the state sector and were forced to get this app.

You will easily find it online.

What harm did Mao's Red book do?
I am Chinese with tonnes of relatives in China....never even heard of this app. That's y I said go to China and check it out. Check the source of this news .

I never criticize you for bringing up Mao, we are proud of him for many achievements he did for the country, what you brought is his little read book and you suggested that me and all Chinese are still following his old policy over half a century ago, it's like saying US still has old system that had been done away with long time ago, that's why I said you are being stuck in Mao's time and how little and ignorant you are about today's China.

Mao's leftist movement is actually regularly gets cracked down in today's China, must be a shocking information for your closed mind being stuck decades ago.

Nnnnooo...You should read what I posted again -- method of citizenry control.

Is it true that Xi 'thought' are established in the Chinese Constitution? If true, what is that all about? Why a living figure? This is one method of psychological control. Now Party members must have a version of Mao's Red Book. Another method of citizenry control. Yes, this app is only for Party members -- for now.

That is all there is -- that the Chinese citizenry needs to be made compliant.

It is not pointless. It is indicative of a people's tendency toward idol worship.

It is a great difference and you know it.

You are mixing up two distinctively different concepts, CPC membership and citizenship.
No, I have not and do not. You live in the US. You should know better than to make that charge towards me. If anything, probably I understand the concept of citizenship better than you do.

Americans are indoctrinated to believe their political system is THE gold standard by which every other system should be judged.
Why not? Why is it wrong to believe your system is the best? It is funny that you would say that considering your China have a constitution and other trappings of democracy and representative republicanism. Where have the Chinese constitution been all this time before the US came to be?

Most of them do not have the ability to excise "critical thinking" as why so.
I doubt most Chinese have the same -- if you want to go there with this app and Mao's Red Book.

A few smart ones are casting doubts on what we take as the "truth", like Prof. Daniel Bell who wrote "China Model". Yeah...When the Cold War was in full swing, I read a few perfessers who said similar glowing things about how the Soviet/Chinese systems were working better than the Western model.

Every government tries to control and brainwash people's mind, In China we always know, in US, people stupidly believe they control the government , the country and the media so they are more likely to believe whatever crap their liar media feeds them, you are just a case in point.

The Americans have a greater control of their government than Chinese have over theirs. That is a fact that even Chinese acknowledged.

You are exactly as what I said, a brainwashed old man. Chinese government is made up by more comprehensive elements from all walks of life and they get there from decades of hardworking and accumulated credits of achievements started from the bottom, thus the government is more responsive to people's needs and social issues. US government is made up by privileged class, tycoons and billionaire like Donald Trump and Bush family, they only care about their personal gains and how to get into the office, average people don't have much to say in running the country.

The Americans have a greater control of their government than Chinese have over theirs. That is a fact that even Chinese acknowledged.
Every Chinese? what a tall claim, I m Chinese and many posters here are also Chinese, are we every Chinese? or every Chinese only means you yourself?

Cute! You are naive to the level of a 10th grade. :partay:

If that is what you really think, you basically have no more idea than a 18 yo first time voter about American political systems, let alone Chinese politics.
