In a first, Russia began military exercise near Afghan borders

DUSHANBE - Russia and Tajikistan on Tuesday began joint military exercises near the Tajik-Afghan border to prepare to ward off potential Taliban attacks.

More than 10,000 troops, mostly Tajik reservists, will take part in the first such drills in the area by the ex-Soviet allies, Tajikistan´s defence ministry said.

Combined forces will practice "eliminating terrorists who broke through" from Afghanistan in an imagined incursion, it said.

Some 400 soldiers and 80 pieces of Russian military equipment were deployed from a military base in Tajikistan for exercises due to last until Friday, the Russian army said.

The drills will take place just over the border from the Afghan province of Badakhshan.

Russia and Tajikistan have intensified military cooperation since US-led forces began withdrawing from Afghanistan in large numbers in 2014.

This is the first time they have held exercises in the sometimes restive Tajik province of Gorno-Badakhshan, where clashes between government and rebel forces took place in 2012.

Previous exercises were held in the country´s southern Khatlon province.

China has beefed up its security assistance in the country in recent times, notably building infrastructure on the 1,300-kilometre (800-mile) border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan and holding its own drills with Tajikistan in 2016.

The border is a haven for drug traffickers and was guarded by Russian troops before they stepped back in 2005. Afghanistan is the world´s biggest opium producer.

My Suggestion is that Pakistan, Russia , China and Iran should create a Joint Force and conduct Operation against ISIS/TTP/JuA in Afghanistan .. America is doing whatever they can to rebrand TTP and ISIS in Afghanistan .

It is not advisable to step inside Afghanistan for a week or longer tenure till ISAF is in Afghanistan.

Getting in and getting out quick within hours and that has to be informed to the Americans.

The reason Afghanistan is attracting more of attention as compare to Syria is because, the warlords are shifting their priorities to this region. Syrian model can be a startup to think as what is going to happen here. Afghanistan remained a buffer-zone since cold war era and mostly probably US wouldn't loose its influential hub to keep a check over Russia & China as well as Pakistan on the same times. Not to forget that our Nuclear capability is yet another pain for many out there.

A war torn Afghanistan, will definitely going affect Pakistan at first. There is reason for special interest by India in Afghanistan. A regional power block is going to solve solution or may contain the threat within Afghanistan. I see the recent 4 spy Chiefs meeting as a reference to the same. So also, US willing for peace talks in Afghanistan could be another major development though, shifting ISIS to the region which is already in conflict with Taliban, wouldn't let peace to prevail till elimination. Blackwater is already suggesting privatized war in Afghanistan. This region is next after M.E and it is understood though, better regional cooperation, relations among major powers and close cooperation based upon mutual interests can detain it.

I don't make the protocols of communication between ISAF in Kabul and GHQ in Rwp. The information and intelligence sharing exists and continues.
Can't keep forgetting Northern Alliance and focus on IS only.

Afghanistan is different than Syria in some major aspects. Anyways, If you really want to keep the model in front, one major part of it was that Syrian Military was backed by Russian Military which took active part in the fight. Pakistan Army if goes in with Chinese Military assets supporting it, which is highly unlikely, then the PA and Talib support factor will be highlighted.

Their is nothing left as such to be called Balkanisation. Though, 1 or 2 parties would take a chance to consume it like pie and I other side would like to poison it if being betrayed, therefore, I will have to keep it safe for my own survival or having no other chance, would take big out of it.
