Imran should not take NA-122 so easy
April 15, 2013 Jawad R Awan
LAHORE – The over-confident PTI chairman, Imran Khan, instead of kick-starting his electoral drive from NA-122 (Lahore), has sent the Punjab chapter leadership to open an electoral battlefield with PML-N which considers the provincial capital as its fortress.

PTI leaders, talking to this correspondent on Sunday, were of the opinion that Imran with his popular wave among the Lahorites should start the electoral campaign from the constituency to turn into reality his challenge PTI could get its political share from the provincial capital.

They observed Imran needed a smart electoral strategy, coupled with his presence in NA-122, despite the fact that he had bagged 18,638 votes from this constituency in the 2002 elections without running a serious campaign against Ayaz Sadiq of PML-N who won this seat by securing 37,531 ballots.

The PTI leaders alleged the inner circle members of Imran were prompting him to adopt an unwise electoral strategy, especially concerning Lahore.

They remarked that PML-N, keeping in view Imran Khan’s candidature from NA-122, would consume all its energies in this constituency to defeat the party chairman with a sizeable margin.

They were of the opinion that the party chairman should understand the important fact that PTI and PML-N were the only potential contestants from NA-122 as PPP which secured second and third position in the last two elections from this constituency could not be considered as a serious player in the 2013 polls in the provincial capital.

They added that the party leadership should not take the task of NA-122 so easy and devise a smart electoral strategy as the time had come to translate the party’s support expressed at Minar-i-Pakistan twice into real-time voters on the day of the polling on May 11.

The local political pundits of NA-122, talking to The Nation, said the people of this constituency like other areas of the province were not happy with their former representatives and the PTI which had emerged as the third political option could exploit the sentiments of voters, especially new and indecisive, but Imran Khan’s staying away from the people of NA-122 on the day of opening his election campaign, had left a negative impact on his electoral drive.

Meanwhile, NA-122 election results of 2008 states: Ayaz Sadiq of PML-N bagged 79506 votes and secured this seat for the second time by defeating PPP’s candidate Mian Omer Misbah who secured 24963 ballots. In the results of 2002 polls, Ayaz Sadiq emerged victorious by getting 37,531 votes while Imran became runner up by bagging 18,638 votes and PPP Candidate Chaudhry Ghulam Qadir remained at number three with 17,561 ballots.

The NA-122 was carved out by bifurcating mainly two previous constituencies, NA-94 and NA-98. It consists of Garhi Shahu, Baja Lines, Mayo Garden, Zaman Park, part of Canal Road, previously part of NA-94, and Shadman, Shah Jamal, GOR, Ichhra, Rehmanpura, Samanabad and some areas of Multan Road, formerly being part of defunct NA-98.

Well he should focus in NA56 as well, because today i saw Hanif abbasi has formally started his campaign but there are no signs of PTI. so they better wakeup because it won't be easy to defeat PMLN in urban punjab.

PTI's campaigns have been late recently, but they have also been highly successful. The presence at Lahore was phenomenal the right strategy could tilt a lot of constituencies into PTI's favour.
