The International Monetary Fund sees Venezuelan inflation spiraling to 13,000 percent this year, as the crisis-torn nation prints money to tackle fiscal deficits and confidence in its currency evaporates.

That’s more than five times the inflation previously projected by the IMF, and way above the median forecast from economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The fund estimates price increases surpassed 2,400 percent last year, according to a report published Thursday by Alejandro Werner, head of the IMF’s Western Hemisphere department. That was the fastest in the world.

Venezuela has succumbed to hyperinflation combined with a prolonged recession stemming from years of mismanagement as well as faltering oil exports. In an attempt to rein in inflation, the government of President Nicolas Maduro has refused to loosen foreign-exchange controls and price caps that have exacerbated the short supply of all sorts of products, from food to medicine.

The IMF expects the Venezuelan economy to contract 15 percent this year, leading to a cumulative GDP decline of nearly 50 percent since 2013. That’s holding back the rebound of the entire region; Latin America is expected to grow 1.9 percent this year, or 2.5 percent without Venezuela. While Venezuela suppresses the regional average, at this point the impact on its neighbors’ output is “very limited,” Werner said in a press conference following the report’s release.

Mexico, Central America and parts of the Caribbean will benefit from stronger US growth, while South America’s prospects have improved due to the end of recessions in Brazil and Argentina, as well as higher prices for the raw materials the region exports, according to the report.

“Recent trends in the world economy and financial markets are good news for Latin America,” Werner wrote. “Global growth and trade are on an upswing, and we expect the momentum to continue in 2018. Stronger commodity prices have also helped the region rebound.”

Prior 2018 Estimate New 2018 Estimate Prior 2019 Estimate New 2019 Estimate
Argentina 2.5 2.5 2.7 2.8
Chile 2.5 3 2.7 3.2
Colombia 2.8 3 3.6 3.6
Ecuador 0.6 2.2 1 1.7
Peru 3.8 4 4 4
Venezuela -6 -15 -2 -6

Ecuador also came out of its recession at a faster-than-expected pace, due to higher oil prices and greater access to financial markets, Werner said. The IMF significantly boosted its 2018 GDP outlook for the nation to 2.2 percent, from 0.6 percent previously. The multilateral also gave a boost to its Chile growth estimates, citing faster momentum carrying over into 2018 amid higher copper prices and improving business sentiment.

Venezuela, its people and its wealth are under attack from big US hedge funds led by many including Soros. This is exactly what these barbarians did to the Thai economy and caused the 'Asian Financial' crisis in 1997 where after causing this crisis they walked in and bought huge amounts of agricultural, industrial and other wealth of these countries by paying fuc.k all 'peanuts'. They are using their fake financial system to control the real wealth of the world.

And still many countries and their people DO NOT get it.

I think you are confusing Argentina with Venezuela.

That's hilarious coming from yet another highly uninformed, clueless yank who doesn't know that the Yanks are living in the matrix aka the fake jewish financial system which is sucking the blood out of them daily and every other country it invades. You people are so dumb that you actually send your sons and daughters to fight abroad and die for this system. KEEP LIVING THE DREAM.

Socialism is bound to fail @jamahir

It didn't fail in Cuba and Libya.

And even in Iraq, even after the 1990-91 war sanctions, the citizens were able to obtain food-stuff from the government rations system.

It can be argued that the USSR got dismantled because of conspiracy and mismanagement. Two years ago, I met a senior CPI(M) leader who had once visited Sochi city during USSR days and also Cuba, and he didn't have any complaints about both places.

How can socialism fail when it is another name for humanitarianism??

As for Venezuela, what is happening there is one of the "colour revolutions" that are led by CIA and other Western intelligence agencies. Before he passed away, Hugo Chavez had started the direct-democracy movement inspired from the Libyan Jamahiriya. The Venezuelan system is called Communas Socialistas ( Socialist Communes ).

We hear nowadays of food shortages in Venezuela and mobs ransacking supermarkets and grabbing any food they can, but Chavez had, during his time, built a system of Urban Farming which meant growing food in urban spaces. This plus direct-democracy allowed each commune to be self-sustaining to an extent[1] :
The search for alternatives led to emergence of new forms of democracy that were local, participatory, direct and communal. Local communes were active participating in rebellions as well in management of local issues such as water, production of crops. Chavez saw no contradiction between democracy and socialism and described “socialism is democracy and democracy is socialism”. Communal councils were established in 2006 and communes in 2010. These existed much before Chavez but got legal recognition under him. These took up issues whether building new roads or basketball courts or drug violence. These were seen as non-capitalist, socialist alternatives. Creation of communal culture was felt necessity to enhance direct democracy.

More[2] :
Communal councils are a group of elected persons from a self-defined residential neighbourhood of about 150 to 400 families in urban areas, or closer to 20 families in rural areas, and potentially 10 in indigenous communities.[3] The principal decision making body of a communal council is the citizens' assembly. The formal functioning committee is composed of the following five units:[3]

  • Citizens' Assembly
  • Executive Body
  • Financial Management Unit
  • Unit of Social Oversight (Anti-corruption)
  • Community Coordination Collective

In India, some of this system ( the direct-democracy part ) has been envisioned by the 'Aam Aadmi Party' through its system called Swaraj. And far as I know, the year 2011 'Occupy' movement in the Anglo countries also call for direct-democracy.
