IIT-B students reduce bulk, cut cost of artillery shell guidance system

It's a somewhat misleading title ... the shells are just dumb shells not guided shells (e.g. Excalibur). This is only about giving weather inputs to the fire control system.

The fact is that wind velocity is typically two to three times as great at 30,000 feet,{Agree but here we are talking about 45000 feet,as I have also mentioned natural phenomenan occurs till 11km. ie roughly till 35000 feet .} in some cases even at 15,000 feet, as it is at 100 feet above ground.100 feet above ground ??? This means a factor of eight to twenty-seven as great for these high altitude winds, reduced only by the lesser air density factors at those altitudes.

Near the surface, the wind speed increases logarithmically with height (up to 3000 feet). Typical values of wind speed are as follows:

5 metre/second(m/s) at 10,000 feet, 10 m/s at 20,000 feet and 15 to 20 m/s at 40,000 feet. So at 45,000 ft wind speeds could range from 20m/s to 30m/sec, which means more than 100km/hSo at 45,000 ft wind speeds could range from 20m/s to 30m/sec, which means more than 100km/h! In absense of negligible mass negligible momentum and hence neglgible dragg due to that.
