An Indian outpost on the Moon- Indian Space Research Agency is working on building Igloo-like structures on the surface of the Moon. The space agency plans to build these 'lunar habitats' by sending robots and 3D printers which will make use of the lunar soil and other materials.
While there is no mission plan yet, ISRO has seen some progress with a working model- developed using a 3D printer in the lunar terrain test facility in India. ISRO scientists have come up with five designs of the lunar habitats, according to a Times of India report. The space agency wants to have the technology ready, if and when the mission gets a green signal.
Comparing the proposed lunar Igloos to India's outposts in Antarctica, M Annadurai, ISRO Satellite Centre (Isac) director told the news publication that they were planning to use the Moon as an outpost, like missions in Antarctica. Noting that that in the future the space station may likely be scrapped, he added that several countries are considering more permanent structures on Earth's satellite, to work out of there.
ISRO plans to have humans work out of the lunar habitats for a longer period of time, and to ensure their safety, the space agency is working on developing smart materials. ISRO has mastered the process of creating lunar simulant, and it has about 60 tonnes of it, Annadurai said.
