Tonnage means little. A single Type 055 can sink dozens of Ticonderoga cruisers and Burke destroyers from a safe distance due to superior radars and missiles, and less RCS. In fact, there's a video explaining how a single Type 052D can sink every Taiwanese warship from a safe distance.

Indeed, Japanese warships trashed Chinese warships and Russian warships despite less tonnage due to superior fire control range finders.
