PESHAWAR: Several security personnel were killed when a remote-controlled bomb exploded in Ghulam Khan tehsil of North Waziristan, DawnNews reported.

Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted in a nearby roadside which was detonated as the security forces convoy came near the area.

North Waziristan is one of the seven regions in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) governed by tribal laws.

An extremist insurgency led by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) plagues the region and the area is known to be infested with militants, including those from Al Qaeda and other armed extremist organisations.

Bomb Kills Eight Soldiers in Pakistani Tribal Area: Military | NDTV.com Pakistan: A roadside bomb killed at least eight soldiers and wounded several others in a restive Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan on Thursday, the military said.

The bomb exploded as a military convoy passed in the village of Ghulamkhan in troubled North Waziristan, one of seven lawless tribal districts where Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants have hideouts.

"At least eight security forces personnel embraced martyrdom in an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blast which had been planted by terrorists on Miranshah-Ghulamkhan road," the military said in a statement.

"Several security forces personnel are critically injured."

Local military officials confirmed the incident and said troops called in air support and launched a search operation in the area after the attack.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but the area is a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban.

The attack comes two weeks after the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) formally ended a ceasefire called to help peace talks with the government.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government began negotiations with the TTP through intermediaries in February in the hope of ending their bloody seven-year insurgency.

Since the TTP rose up against the Pakistani state in 2007, more than 6,800 people have been killed in bomb and gun attacks around Pakistan, according to an AFP tally.

PESHAWAR: A remote-controlled bomb exploded on Thursday killing at least 12 Frontier Corps personnel and injuring several others in Ghulam Khan Tehsil of North Waziristan tribal region.

However, a statement issued by the Inter Services Public relations (ISPR) confirmed that at least nine security personnel were killed and several others were critically wounded.

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted on the roadside which was detonated as the security forces convoy came near the Miramshah road.

Following the incident, additional security personnel immediately reached the site of the incident and cordoned off the area as a search operation went underway.

The victims were shifted to a nearby hospital.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far which might have been an attack.

North Waziristan is one of the seven regions in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) governed by tribal laws.

An extremist insurgency led by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) plagues the region and the area is known to be infested with militants, including those from Al Qaeda and other armed extremist organisations.

Meanwhile, a roadside bomb was defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) in Khyber tribal agency.

According to the sources, the bomb was targeted at the polio team.

In separate incidents, unidentified militants blew up a 500 KV Sheikh Mohammadi transmission line in Peshawar whereas security forces destroyed the residence of a militant in Khyber tribal region.

These incidents came as the government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) peace talks are underway.

Previously, TTP agreed for a ceasefire that led to the smooth peace process.

However, the talks faced deadlocks as TTP refused to extend its ceasefire.

Pak army needs to take action first against supporters that live in pakistan like zaravan and friends then hit Fata area as hard as they can.

We cannot say enough about the sacrifices made by the Pakistani security forces in fighting terrorism. We take our hat off to these brave soldiers who died while serving their country. We send our condolences to their families, and sincerely hope that they will find the strength to deal with this tragedy. Our nations have been working side by side to negate the threat of terrorism, and no two other nations could understand each other’s sacrifices more in our common fight against terrorism. We have lost thousands of brave soldiers in trying to restore peace throughout the region. The terrorists have been unable to break our shared will and desire to succeed against terrorism. We remain committed to restoring peace in the region, and fully support the government of Pakistan in their quest for peace.
