Trump won because he promised people change they want, stop on illegal immigration, crackdown on radicals, more jobs for americans etc

It is true that the Idiocracy movie has been an indicator for American politics of late. However, it is not in the remedial "skin- deep" way OP has suggested. It goes beyond that.
In the movie it shows that a politician who just keeps repeating catch phrases (make America great again) without coherence, and keeps a charismatic look about it, will gain the support of the simpleton mass. In short- a demagogue doesn't need to have any solid policies or any explanation how to make his/her ideas a reality and just pander to mass hysteria. Here's are articles which explains it better:

Obama won the election in 2008 on hope and change rhetoric. He did nothing. He's a snake liar. It remains to be seen what Trump will do.
