It is true that the Idiocracy movie has been an indicator for American politics of late. However, it is not in the remedial "skin- deep" way OP has suggested. It goes beyond that.
In the movie it shows that a politician who just keeps repeating catch phrases (make America great again) without coherence, and keeps a charismatic look about it, will gain the support of the simpleton mass. In short- a demagogue doesn't need to have any solid policies or any explanation how to make his/her ideas a reality and just pander to mass hysteria. Here's are articles which explains it better:
