NEW YORK: The head of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Judge Theodore Meron, Friday met Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations, Masood Khan, to brief him on the tribunal's work and to thank Pakistan for its "consistent support", according to a press release.

Thee Hague-based tribunal was established by the United Nations in 1993 to prosecute serious crimes committed during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, and to try their perpetrators.

The press release said Judge Meron also thanked Pakistan for providing an outstanding judge, Khalida Rashid Khan, who is former President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and is currently serving as a judge of Appeals Chamber of the same tribunal.

"The ICTY had established a norm of accountability and upheld the trampled rights of people of Bosnia", Masood Khan said. "Pakistan stands for justice and fair play", he added.

Judge Meron said that the Tribunal had conducted its business efficiently despite heavy odds against it. The ICTY, he said, had been fair and impartial in its work.
