IceBoy's frozen hair shocks China

There's been an outpouring of generosity in China towards a young boy who showed up to school with frozen hair.

Photographs of 'Little Wang' spread through Chinese social media earlier this week. One showed his hair spiked with ice crystals, and another showed not just how cold his hands were - they were swollen - but that he still managed to get 99/100 on a test.

Local state media reports the eight-year-old walks 4.5km every day to get to school, and the day the photo was taken, it was -9degC outside. He lives with grandmother and sister - his parents moved to the city for work, and rarely see him.

The BBC reports his teacher at the school in Ludian County, Yunnan, took the photos on January 8 and sent them to the school's headmaster, and they quickly went viral online under the hashtag #IceBoy.

But rather than mockery, users of social media site Weibo felt a mixture of pride in Wang's determination, and horror at the life he was born in to.

"This child knows that knowledge can change his fate," said one user.

"What is the local Yunnan government doing about this?" asked another.

The provincial Communist Youth League donated about NZ$21,500 to his school so it can supply better clothes and improve its heating system, CCTV reported.

Others wondered how many other millions of children face the same hardships as Wang.

"No one knows how many poor children there are, helping one is only helping one," one social media user commented.

Despite China already has a fast development to lift people out of poverty and improve living standard, if it can, China should even fastening it again.

. . .
That's sad to see. Those swollen cheeks and hands must be painful. But I'm glad to see he's hardworking and determined to absorb knowledge and improve his life in the future.

Always think of the unfortunate struggling in other parts of the world when you're wasting the Earth's resources.

. .
The determination he and millions of poor village school kids have shown is one of the reasons that China is destined to her rejuvenation.

Not one. But the main. The determination and endurance shown by China's people has been incredible. Sadly, the wealthy modern generation can't bear the same hardship. This is why wealth often makes people complacent and the countries fate under dire duress.

You've seen nothing yet my boy .

China is still developing and still poor, determination and ambition is still overflowing.

Maybe in regards of manual labor hardworking the younger generation is less tenacious to some extent, but they are now way more open minded , well educated and confident , still a much better generation comparing with the west.

Chinese people do not believe in next life, unlike people in some religious countries, so they work hard to make the most out of this life. That's why China is what it is today.

It happens everywhere ,not only in China. Rich people give money to rich people to get fame or future opportunities.

It's the same everywhere, including Singapore. There's a Chinese saying: 富不过三代; Wealth doesn't last three generations.

Donations have flooded in after a picture of young boy with his hair and eyebrows covered in ice after a long trek to school during freezing temperatures in a poor area of western China went viral online.

The boy’s father has also been offered a job in his hometown so he will no longer have to leave his family and work away from home.

The first batch of 100,000 yuan (US$15,370) was handed over
by the local authorities to Zhuangshanbao primary school in a rural area of Zhaotong in Yunnan province, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The photograph widely shared on social media in China showed Wang Fuman as he arrived at school after walking about 4.5km (2.8 miles) from home.

His hair and eyebrows were covered in frost and his cheeks red with cold after he walked in freezing temperatures in thin clothing.

The picture moved internet users in China, depicting the hardships the boy from a poor family endures to get to school.

Wang is a “left-behind child”, a term used to describe youngsters from poor families whose parents work in cities away from home. The amount of care and support given to left-behind children by the authorities has regularly sparked debate on social media in China in recent years.

State television said that on top of the first donation to the school, 81 pupils were each given 500 yuan in subsidies.

Also, 144 items of warm clothing and heating equipment were donated by an engineering firm, the People’s Daily said. The company is also behind the job offer to Wang’s father.

State television quoted the boy as saying: “I’m so happy because many people are helping me and have given me many gifts.”

Wang’s father returned from working away home after his son’s photograph became a viral sensation.

He gave his son pocket money of 5 yuan. The boy was then quoted by the news website Thepaper.cn as saying: “I want to save it for treatment when my parents get sick.”

The Yunnan Youth Development Foundation said it had received over 1.9 million yuan in donations by Thursday afternoon.

The foundation also plans to deliver donations to other left-behind children in nine different cities in Yunnan.
