IAF is going in for a new kind of sophisticated radar but it will not be used to monitor Pakistani fighters or Chinese missiles. Instead, it will locate, track and monitor birds. With bird hits causing 9% of the over 1,000 aircraft crashes recorded by IAF since 1970, plans are afoot to equip 41 airbases with “avian radars” over the next couple of years.
Compared to the other reasons for crashes, mainly technical defects (39.5%) and human errors (39%) due to aging aircraft and inadequate pilot training, the risk from birds may be relatively small but it’s still a crucial flight safety concern.

Avian radars will ensure data on birds like height, number, collision course and the like is streamed to aircraft in real-time for necessary evasive action. “Military aviation, with its intricate combat manoeuvres, is inherently dangerous. Pilots have to manage many risks at the same time while flying. Even a sparrow can cause a mighty fighter to crash. Avian radars will go a long way in bird strike mitigation,” said a senior officer.

Avian radars are not all. IAF also has an “ornithology cell” at the directorate of aerospace safety and conducts regular bird surveys, some by the Bombay Natural History Society, to manage the bird menace. A “bird lab” is also now being established in collaboration with the National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, for DNA bar-coding of different bird species of the Indian sub-continent. “A barcode library of 26 Indian species has already been developed, with another 50 species to be added to it soon,” said an official.

Moreover, IAF also wants to procure 72 microlites for carrying out survey of bird activities, monitoring of high-rise structures, garbage and carcass disposal sites which attract birds. A road-map for “environment management of airfield areas (EMAA)” is also being formalized for bird, wildlife and vegetation management.

With many of its airbases situated in and around cities and towns like Agra, Bareilly, Gwalior,Srinagar and Tezpur, among others, IAF has for long undertaken several bird hazard control measures. These range from `zone guns’, automated scarecrows and special frequency transmitters to proper garbage disposal, solid waste management and “risk awareness campaigns” among the citizenry. “Environment cleaning is also conducted within airbases to deny a habitat for birds and animals. But bird hits still remain a very serious problem,” he added.

Come on! Now conveniently MOD babus are blaming the bird strikes when they have no excuse for their corrupt and indecisive attitude.

No wonder our defense is all over the place with lack of any damn focus. Is this IAF's job now? Open Ornithology centers? :frown:

Bird strikes are a big menace to airplanes..
more so if people live closely to the bases.. since then they tend to dump refuse close to the base.. attracting scavenging birds and putting the lives of pilots at risk.

I know the risk exists but not enough like how it is said by MOD and IAF officials here. They make it look as if they are perfect. European air forces are not crying about it, nor are US and Australian air forces. This is because they have done their schoolwork while IAF and MOD has not. Simple as that.

From whom are they buying it ? If there is any forign firm in contention to supply those radars then I cam 1000% sure it will have kick backs.
Except for MMS and Anthony this entire lot are more corrupt than kauravas. :frown:

That has to do with most of the European and US airbases being further out from the population.
In our "desi" case.. the bases tend to attract population.. people tend to settle down close to them. Most of them for employment on the base.
Even bases further out.. for eg Samungli.. have attracted locals for jobs.
Moreover, not much can be done about bases close to the shore.. where gulls and other birds are commonplace.
One desi technique is to call up the local "shikar" freak.. and let them loose.

This is excellent news and actuality highlights IAF's professionalism and new found focus on flight safety. 9% is a significant proportion and of this can be reduced by even a few percent this will be a great success. Try telling the grieving families of pilots who have been killed by flame outs cause by bird strikes or people on the ground killed and injured by crashing AC that this is unessercary and not needed. Even one pilot's life being saved by this tech well justifies its procurement.

And for your information I have visited many RAF bases in UK as part of my job and they have these kind of tech and dedicated teams just for this menace and I'm sure the USAF have similar tech. And many AFs have similar tech labs, the IAF encompasses a wide range of arms and services not just fighters.
