I simply don't believe them. If they can't manage a much smaller, simpler Kaveri engine, I doubt that they can produce the bigger engine required for Su-30. Beside, India does not have the ability to manufacturer advanced material yet for jets, which is why it has to import the material for the LCA project. Also, India cannot yet make most of the on board electronics and radar...

The Al-31FP is built in India by HAL at the Koraput facility under a deep technology transfer agreement.

It is possible that India assembles the engine. However, there is no way Russia will transfer all the material technology to it.

Engine structure is the easy part, however, making pieces that will endure high temperature for such prolong hours without deforming is EXTREMELY difficult...

August 19, 2009, (Sawf News) - HAL is currently testing an indigenously manufactured version of the Su-30MKI engine and aims to rollout the first MKI manufactured entirely in India from raw materials by 2010.

Speaking to newsmen at MAKS 2009, HAL Chairman V. Balakrishna said HAL mastered the manufacture of the wing and the tail, last year and plans to start producing the fuselage and raw materials this year.

Manufacture of the engine, the most challenging aspect of indigenization, will be undertaken in the final phase.

"We're currently testing the locally produced engine for the Su-30MKI and are planning to launch its production in 2010," he said.

The IAF has placed an order for 140 Su-30MKIs with HAL. By June 2009, HAL had assembled 42 MKIs.

HAL is progressively moving from assembly of the aircraft from CKD kits to manufacture from raw materials within the country.

HAL hopes to manufacture 60 Su-30MKI fighters in the full production cycle till 2015, says Mr. Balakrishnan.

India purchased 50 Su-30K aircraft from Sukhoi in Russia in 1996 and acquired a license to manufacture an additional 140 fighters at HAL.

In January 2009, India ordered an additional 40 Su-30MKIs from Russia.

I guess You have to have passed the "Raw Material" stage to make an engine first and then Test it. [ The Report suggests they are Testing it, means they got the Raw materials. ]

However, i agree that Indians have a long way to go to master this tech.

Sources said that the entire Sukhoi fleet, which numbers close to 90 and is currently deployed in Pune, Bareily and Tezpur, has been grounded till a preliminary investigation gives an all clear following the crash. Sources also said that the aircraft that crashed was a brand new fighter that had recently been rolled out by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India and was part of an upcoming squadron in Pune.

No...it was based at Barali....and was participating in a war exercise in Rajasthan.

100% or not, that is depending on how you define "indigenous". USAF is also buying components from Japan and Taiwan, yet F22 is regarded as indigenous one, right.
however, having the capability to produced a engine locally is not equivalent to having the capability to produced indigenous engines. take the fishing industry for example, if you were given the ship, tools and the skills to manipulate them, then you could run your business. nevertheless, what if the ships and the tools were taken away. and, the formular to process the raw material is no more than the skills to drive a ship-- important, but not the whole story yet.

Two Crashes in 12 Years.....thats a commendable record for any fighter aircraft family.

yes it is but we lost 2 plane with in 6-8 month this about serious concern

Btw, They have already retarded several Su27 Airframes.

Even the Ultra Mordern F22 had 3 Crashes in 4 Years
while MKI had Just 2 in 12 Years !
