In 2012, the Cabinet Committee on security (CCS), the country's apex security decision making body gave its nod to acquire 450 MICA interception and aerial combat missiles from MBDA Europe.

The IAF has 51 upgraded Mirage-2000s with newer generation avionics, Electronic Warfare (EW) suites, and advanced beyond visual range (BVR) capability. The Mirage jets were completely opened up for body strengthening during the upgrade program.

The IAF's Mirage-2000s are now upgraded to Mirage-2005 standard and should serve the IAF till around 2035. All of them would be capable of nuclear strike if there is a threat.

India had ordered the Mirage-2000s shortly after Pakistan obtained F 16s, C3I computers, warships and Harpoon anti-shipping missiles from the US in 1982.

MICA (Missile d’interception et de combat aérien) or Interception and Aerial Combat Missile, is available in two configurations. MICA RF has an active radar homing seeker and MICA IR has an imaging infra red homing seeker. It is both Within Visual Range (WVR) and Beyond Visual Range (BVR) all-weather air-to-air missile and can be fired at multiple hostile aircraft in fire-and-forget mode. The French Air Force uses MICA on both its Mirage 2000 and Rafale aircraft.

MICA can be configured to attack hostile aircraft from vertical launchers from ground and ships as a Surface to Air (SAM) variant but for India, the deal involves only air-to-air missiles.

The IAF has become one of the few air forces in the world with the capability of such missile. The operational success of this mission confirms a critical capability of Indian Air Force.

India purchased 450 MICAs from European missile major MBDA as part of the Mirage 2000 upgrade deal from France in 2012 for $1.23 billion. The MICA will be mounted on the 36 Rafale combat jets that India is purchasing from France, the deal for which was inked on September 23.

No support for Meteor and Scalp is disheartening even after spending $40 million on upgrade per aircraft.

I read a post from some indian here in PDF, he was stating that upgraded M2K of india which are designated M2K-5 are better from those M2K-9 which UAE has. is that right?

The designation is suffice to conclude which is better, however i found this that may answer your query.

The Dassault Mirage 2000-5 Mk2:
•Unit Cost is $23 million
•Has a shorter range by 1,107 nautical miles at 783 nautical miles
•Can cruise 5,000 ft higher at 55,000 ft
•Reaches a 350 knot (403 mph) lower max. cruise speed at 140 knots (161 mph)
•Mirage 2000-5 Mk2: -1,107 nm
•New Avionics , new full glass cockpit , enhanced range , new RDY-2 multimode radar , mid-air refuling capablity , new EWS suite , new weapons to fire etc.

The Dassault Mirage 2000-9:
•Unit Cost is $23 million
•Has a shorter range by 1,060 nautical miles at 830 nautical miles
•Can cruise 9,000 ft higher at 59,000 ft
•Reaches a 350 knot (403 mph) lower max. cruise speed at 140 knots (161 mph)
•Mirage 2000-9: -1,060 nm .The Mirage 2000-9 can fly 47 nautical miles farther than the Mirage 2000-5 Mk2.
••New Avionics , new full glass cockpit , enhanced range , new RDY-2 multimode radar , mid-air refuling capablity , new EWS suite , new weapons to fire etc.
•The Mirage 2000-9 is equipped with a pioneering IT “core system” architecture as of last generation aircraft (Rafale, F-22 & F-35/JSF).

How can they be effectively BVR without having MICAs? What BVRs they have been carrying uptil now?

Both are same.

They were carrying Matra Super 530 BVRs

IAF purchased 800 of these for its Jaguar IS and Mirage 2000H during the mid 1980s

Now both Jaguars and Mirage 2005 will be equipped with the more capable Mica

Jaguar's. Equipped with ASRAAM

How is Mirage-2005 with MICA against PAF F-16 with AIM-120?
Well In two lines, MICA is said to have a better maneuverability( g limit) and NEZ( no escape zone) but less range.

More or less all these upgrades are similar. Indian upgraded Mirages are designated at Mirage-2000I.

As was given above, both are very similar machines.
If an edge had to be given, Dash Nines are better ...
but that's by a rather small margin on the combat system.

Good day all, Tay.
