In a display of solidarity with the people of the Philippines, which was hit by super typhoon Haiyan last Friday, the Government of India today despatched a relief package comprising medicines, hygiene items and chemicals, among other things.

The package, sent by an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft to Mactan, also includes tentage, blankets, tarpaulins and ready-to-eat meals, an official press release said.

The supplies will help meet the urgent need for life-saving medical care, food supplies and construction of temporary shelters in the Pacific nation, it said.

Plans are underway to further supplement the effort and provide additional relief material through an Indian Naval Ship that will set sail at the earliest, the release added.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had conveyed his condolences to Philippines President Benigno Aquino over the loss of life and destruction caused by the typhoon and assured him that India was ready to provide all help in the relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Official figures put out by the Philippines government said 1,774 people had been reported dead, 2,487 were reported injured and 82 were missing.

The death toll is expected to go up in the coming days as rescue teams reach more of the affected areas.

The figures also said that more than 580,000 people had been displaced and 41,000 houses had been damaged in the disaster.
