IAF backs pilot who refused to fly Rahul Gandhi | idrw.org

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has extended its support to the pilot who refused to fly Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi from riot-hit areas of lower Assam to Guwahati airport citing bad weather.

In a statement e-mailed to the media this morning, the Air Force said: “Based on the prevailing weather and approaching sunset, the pilot taking the safety of the VIP as being paramount, arrived at the decision that it was unsafe to undertake the flight. The pilot’s decision was taken using his professional judgment.”

On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi was forced to change his travel plans as the IAF pilot did not oblige his request for flying him back to Guwahati.

He was on a day’s trip to the state to meet victims of ethnic violence in relief camps and held discussions with Bodoland Territorial Council leaders on the prevailing situation in Assam.

While travelling back to Guwahati with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, he was denied permission by the IAF officials to take off due to the bad weather, sources said here.

An IAF spokesperson in New Delhi confirmed that Gandhi had wanted to fly to Guwahati urgently for a meeting there but due to bad weather prevailing en route and at the destination, the permission was not given.

Of course the IAF backs the pilot, he is a professional who use his judgement and expertise to come to the descion. The pilot did it for the safety of Rahul as well as the plane these are the tow primary concerns of a pilot. He didn't do this for a power trip this is a none issue.

This shouldn't even be news. The pilot made a judgement call about weather conditions, and decided it was too risky to fly. That much comes as part of their job description. If he had refused to fly because of his political orientation, that would have been a matter for national news media to report.

What I found funny of this incident was that they even called the Defence minister on this when the pilot refused.

Glad the Pilot stood his ground. Flying in the East is dicey at the best of times, during monsoons one needs to be doubly careful.

It's bloody good the armed forces are proffesional enough to stand their ground and say "No" to these ignorant self-important idiots who think they know better than an expert. But like has been said this is a non story. If the pilot had since been dismissed, had the IAF not backed their pilot,had the pilot had to fly against his better judgment, had the DM or someone else got involved and ordered the pilot to fly etc THEN it would be news, as is this news means NOTHING.

In what capacity Rahul can avail to fly in IAF's choppers???He is just treasury bench MP he is not even a minister.MP's are not allowed to fly in Armed forces choppers.
