Well, not just found out, I was noticed about a month ago, the army is putting me up for another Silver Star medal for what I did in Iraq 13 years ago LOL....I already had one for pulling my soldier out of a burning building during a firefight, now I have to schedule an interview with the DoD investigator because I am the ranking officer of my group during that action.

13 years after the action? Lol......this is crazy...I thought that was over and I don't even remember much what I did to begin with....

Wish me luck If I get it I will get a Silver Star with a bronze oak leaf cluster

Well. This is Pakistan. Depending on your rank and medal you'd get 1˜4 kanal of land in cantonment, or agricultural land, commercially worth anything between USD100,000 to USD2,000,000 (depending on how you get along with senior officers).

And for non-commissioned rank, you'd get USD500 - USD5,000. And if you were sadly in Police service or comparable, you'd get a photo op with some senior officer, and if you were very very lucky and alive, some high up from District Management would visit your dwelling!

Probably a lot harder to get a medal in Pakistani Army tho, I mean not like in the US. Where they give you a medal for just about anything. I had 17 medals, 1 Silver Star, Bronze Stars (with 1 V and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf), 4 Purple Hearts, 1 Meritorious Service Medal, 1 Army Commendation Medal, 2 Army Good Conduct Medal, 1 Army Distinguished Service Medal, 1 National Defence Service Medal, 1 Afghan Campaign Medal, 1 Iraq Campaign Medal, 1 Global War on Terror Service Medal and 1 NATO ISAF medal.....

For all that, only the Silver Star, 1 Bronze Star (the one with V) and the Purple Hearts are what we called Combat Medal, other is just an achievement. Even then, Bronze Star is quite easy to get and Purple is a given if you were wounded by enemy fire. The Silver Star is a bit tricky.

What I hear was, British Commonwealth (or ex-commonwealth) have a different approach on medal, they only give medal that are combat and Bravery related, probably that's the reason why, otherwise if the US even consider financial compensation for any medal we had, they would have bankrupt a long time ago

Not just Pakistan but most ex-Brtish colonizes. It is a way of saying "Thank You for your service".

A friend of mine, who as a young Lt. in PA, performed extremely well in a border skirmish, and saved a fellow soldiers life, was awarded commercial land in his home town - Karachi. Which he donated to the fallen of his unit.

Soldiers are a breed apart, they don't think about monetary benefits or medals, when they ride into battle. All they think about it doing their jobs and getting out. GIGO - Get In Get Out.

Whether you get the medal or not, you did your duty. This is what matters. This is the inner strength, that will get you through a lot of tough battles in life. Stand tall!

Well, I think all medal was a way to say "Thank you for your service"

We probably won't have this tradition because medal for US Soldiers is quite normal and basically you will get a few for not doing anything. Medal was selfdom donated other than Medal of Honor or Distinguish Service Cross, Silver Star were some time donated if the recipient is well known or the action is well known.

But in all, yes, I don't think about getting paid or medal when I was over there in the war, trust me, there are a lot of other concern when you are over there than worry about getting paid and getting medal.

As I said, I am not expecting to get a medal, not at all after I left 9 years ago, so this is just came as a surprise to me...

Thanks for all, just an update on this issue, I just met a LtCol today and we have a formal interview in one of these room inside the US Embassy.

I have asked them for a tape of the official interview and I will transcribe it later when I have time.

If the medal came thru, I will be awarded a silver star for an act of valour. This would be my second silver star.
